As part of our El Niño preparedness efforts, 27 RCAT volunteers in Kwale County are meeting to strengthen readiness for potential emergencies. The meeting is focusing on reviewing potential risks, sharing key information, clarifying volunteer roles, and agreeing on actions to support communities before, during, and after El Niño-related emergencies.

As a next step, the team will finalize preparedness plans, strengthen coordination and communication, disseminate essential preparedness messages to communities, and ensure volunteers are adequately prepared to take early action and respond effectively when needed.

KRCS- Youth Volunteers Taking Climate Action 🌱

Our youth volunteers took part in an activity where they used coconut husks to make planting pots. 🌱🥥

This simple but impactful activity helps conserve the environment by reducing waste, conserving water, supporting plant growth, and encouraging tree planting. 🌍

By turning waste into something useful, our youth are promoting recycling, sustainability, and climate action while inspiring their communities to protect our environment.

💚 Small actions, big impact! Together, we can create a greener and more sustainable future.

Kwale County has been identified among the areas likely to be affected by the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to bring heavy and above-average rainfall.

In preparedness, we participated in the Kwale County Steering Group meeting, which focused on strengthening preparedness and coordination ahead of the anticipated El Niño. Key discussions included the adaptation and updating of the County El Niño Contingency Plan, as well as the review and alignment of sector-specific response plans.

The meeting provided an important platform for stakeholders to coordinate preparedness actions, identify priority interventions, and strengthen collective readiness to respond effectively to potential flooding and other impacts associated with the anticipated heavy rains.

In order to develop the branch’s priority areas, a team of 13, comprising of governance members, volunteers, youth, and staff, has been taking part in a two-day Branch Organizational Capacity to Act (BOCA2.0) exercise in Kwale County. The exercise uses self-reflection approach that enables branches to identify their existing strengths, assess gaps, and highlight areas requiring improvement and investment.

Through the exercise, several priority areas have been identified, including mobilizing and effectively managing resources, understanding and responding to the diverse needs of communities, and strengthening and expanding the branch’s volunteer network.
These priorities will guide the branch in developing targeted actions to strengthen organizational sustainability, improve community responsiveness, and build a strong, active, and diverse volunteer base that can support the branch in delivering its humanitarian mandate.

To enhance the knowledge and capacity of our staff, volunteers, and Community Health Promoters, we are hosting a four-day training on epidemic preparedness, community-based surveillance, and community engagement and accountability. The training will equip 25 participants with skills on the early detection of disease outbreaks, community surveillance, and public health interventions. The training will also strengthen their capacity in case identification, referral, and the management of dehydration during diarrheal disease outbreaks, enabling timely community-level support and improving overall preparedness and response.

In his opening remarks, the County Disease Surveillance Coordinator commended the Kenya Red Cross Society for supporting the implementation of the Cholera Early Action Plan in anticipation of potential cholera outbreaks in the county. He emphasized that investing in early action is essential for preventing disease spread, reducing the impact of outbreaks, and protecting vulnerable communities before emergencies escalate.

Today, 30 of our volunteers are taking part in a Safeguarding and Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (SEAH) sensitization session. The sensitization aims to strengthen their understanding of safeguarding principles. As the volunteers work closely with children, families, and communities, safeguarding is key in creating safe, respectful, and inclusive environments for the people we serve.

Through the Maximizing RUTF Benefits Project, we carried out Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) sensitization for community members in Msambweni and Lunga Lunga sub-counties.

The sensitization sessions followed the baseline survey, which helped us understand the community's knowledge of nutrition and identify key gaps. The survey showed that many caregivers and community members needed more information on good nutrition, the correct use of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), and the importance of completing treatment for children with malnutrition.
Working closely with Community Health Promoters (CHPs), we held focused group discussions where participants learned about exclusive and continued breastfeeding, eating a balanced diet using different food groups, good water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices, and the correct use of RUTF for children receiving treatment for severe acute malnutrition.
These sessions will help improve community knowledge on nutrition, encourage healthy feeding and hygiene practices, support the proper use of RUTF, and empower caregivers to make informed decisions that promote the health, growth, and well-being of their children.

As the holiday season approaches, the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Kwale County is welcoming schools to learn about sustainable environmental conservation.

Students are introduced to low-cost, innovative practices, such as using coconut husks as biodegradable planting pots for tree seedlings.

This eco-friendly initiative, supported by the British Red Cross, reduces agricultural waste and encourages sustainable resource use. Through these visits, students gain practical knowledge to adopt climate-smart initiatives in their communities, fostering a greener future.

Today, we held the inception meeting for the Simplified Cholera Early Action Protocol (EAP) project. This initiative is designed to enable a rapid, anticipatory response to cholera risks before a full-scale outbreak occurs.

The meeting provided an opportunity to introduce the project, discuss its goals and objectives, and outline the planned readiness and early action activities. Participants engaged in productive discussions on the project's implementation and the roles of the various stakeholders in ensuring its success.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Department of Health for its commitment and continued support toward the implementation of the project's readiness and early action activities. This collaboration will play a vital role in strengthening cholera preparedness and protecting communities from the impacts of future outbreaks.
