Londiani forest is the largest indigenous montane forest in East Africa. The its called Mau Forest complex has an area of 273,300 hectares (675,000 acres).The forest area has some of the highest rainfall rates in Kenya.it is the largest water catchment area in Kenya.Numerous rivers originate from the forest, including Southern Ewaso Ng'iro, Sondu River, Mara River and Njoro River. These rivers fee
d Lake Victoria, Lake Nakuru and Lake Natron. Western slopes of the Mau Escarpment are covered by Mau Forest.The group has since then had several developments including the establishment of a football club and a darts club using the two flagship bird species. Current activities in and around Londiani Forest include:
Local capacity building for entrepreneurship development, participatory natural resources management and community leadership
Development and promotion of ecotourism activities
Improved rural heath and hygiene
Biodiversity Monitoring
Promotion of alternative sources of livelihood for the local people e.g.,Birdwatching, Beekeeping,and Commercial tree planting,
LFGA activities at the Londiani forest include:
De-snaring and anti-poaching campaigns
Monthly bird walks
Tent hire and camping services
Community conservation education. Customer care, birding and guiding training in eco tourism for the local community. Capacity building for tour guides
Research assistance to forest related studies
LFGA started out as a guiding group for tourists visiting the forest .At the end of the group got involved in the Birdwatching project due to their expertise in birding and para taxonomy. The group has since then had several developments including the establishment of a Athletic club and a darts club using the two flagship bird species.
