In the heart of Rombo, women from the Rombo Emampuli Conservancy are proving that with the right support and opportunity, rural women can transform their lives and become drivers of change within their communities.

Through the Mwanamke Bora Project, implemented by the Amboseli Ecosystem Trust in partnership with Kenya Community Development Foundation, women from the Maasai Awareness Organization (MAO) received training, modern beadwork equipment, and materials to strengthen their traditional craftsmanship and turn it into a sustainable source of income.

During a recent monitoring visit, the project's impact was evident. The women proudly showcased an impressive collection of innovative and beautifully crafted beadwork products, demonstrating not only their creativity but also the skills they have gained through the initiative.

As explained by the project lead, Mr. Daniel Kaaka, the project was envisioned to enhance women's economic empowerment and to bridge existing barriers that hinder women's full participation in economic activities, decision-making processes, and sustainable livelihood opportunities within their communities.

As the women and youth groups under the Mwanamke Bora Project continue to grow and expand their enterprises, it is evident that there is immense potential to transform livelihoods, strengthen household incomes, and create lasting economic opportunities across the community in Amboseli.

Schools across the Amboseli landscape are largely made up of children from local communities who live alongside wildlife and depend on the natural resources that sustain both people and nature.

For many of these students, wildlife, livestock, and conservation are not distant concepts but part of their everyday lives.

This makes environmental education an important tool in shaping future generations that understand and appreciate the value of protecting the Amboseli ecosystem.

As part of its commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, the Amboseli Ecosystem Trust recently conducted a conservation education visit to Olgulului Primary School, in Olgulului area.

The visits provided an opportunity to engage students on key conservation issues, including wildlife protection, ecosystem conservation, climate change, and tree planting.

By engaging students at an early age, AET aims to nurture a generation that is knowledgeable, responsible, and committed to protecting the Amboseli ecosystem for years to come.

Through continued engagement with schools across the ecosystem, AET remains dedicated to cultivating conservation champions who will help ensure an ecosystem where people and nature thrive in harmony.

The Enyuata Women Group from the Loosoitok area within Motikanju Conservancy, Kuku GR, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, determination, and the transformative strength of women-led community action.

When Amboseli Ecosystem Trust first engaged the group as explained by the group leader Raeli ene Musa, they were doing merry go rounds to support each other.

In 2024, AET trained them on the establishment and management of kitchen gardens as part of efforts to strengthen their resilience to the impacts of climate change while also enhancing household food security and economic empowerment.

The sudden closure of USAID funding disrupted the support that AET had been providing to the group.

However, rather than giving up, the women chose to push forward.

Using income generated from the sale of vegetables from their kitchen gardens, they established a small fuel business, taking advantage of the area’s remoteness and the growing demand for fuel from motorbike operators and local residents.

Impressed by the resilience and continued growth of the women group, AET re-engaged the group in 2026 through the Mwanamke Bora Project supported by Kenya Community Development Foundation.

Through the project, the women received gala goat breeds to further strengthen their economic empowerment, improve household livelihoods, and advance women’s inclusion in community development and decision-making processes.

Their journey is an inspiring testament to the power of resilience, unity, and determination.

Despite facing financial setbacks and limited support, the women transformed challenges into opportunities, steadily growing from a small savings group into a thriving community enterprise.

Raeli Ene Musa says she remains hopeful about the future of women and the opportunities ahead for grassroots communities.

Amboseli Ecosystem Trust will continue working closely with women’s groups in the Amboseli landscape, to champion economic empowerment, strengthen inclusion, and enhance the meaningful participation of women in community development and sustainable livelihoods initiatives.

Today is the , themed "Acting locally for global impact" emphasizing that global goals to reverse nature loss depends on community led and local level conservation actions.

This is true in the Amboseli landscape, where communities continue to play a leading role in protecting wildlife, restoring ecosystems, and securing sustainable livelihoods.

Through community conservancies, habitat restoration, sustainable grazing practices, and women and youth-led enterprises, local people are demonstrating that conservation works best when communities are at the center of decision-making and action.

These actions have global impacts because biodiversity connects the world. Healthy ecosystems in Amboseli support wildlife migration, strengthen climate resilience, protect water catchments, and sustain livelihoods that millions of people and species depend on beyond local boundaries.

So we celebrate these actions by the local communities of Amboseli in the restoration of degraded rangelands, protection of wildlife, and promotion of sustainable livelihoods that support both people and nature.

The Amboseli Ecosystem Trust is honored to participate in the BIODEV Legacy Workshop convened by IUCN in Nairobi. The two day workshop brings together multilateral partners, conservation stakeholders and government agencies to reflect on lessons, partnerships and investment pathways that can advance biodiversity positive development in Kenya.

For AET, these engagements are an important opportunity to showcase community-led conservation solutions from the Amboseli landscape and strengthen conversations and support for conservancies, restoration, biodiversity financing and inclusive governance.

Speaking at the workshop, AET Communication officer, John Kasaine rallied for increased support to support implementation of land use policies such as the Amboseli Ecosystem Management Plans ( AEMP 2020-2030) that safeguards critical grazing and wildlife dispersal areas in the ecosystem.

Through strategic partnerships and collaborations, biodiversity gains can be translated to support local communities and secure the long term sustainable of conservation in Amboseli.

Kenya’s bold ambition to grow 15 billion trees by 2032 is more than a target it is a call to restore landscapes, strengthen livelihoods, and secure the future of people and wildlife.

In Amboseli, trees are deeply connected to community wellbeing, supporting pasture, providing shade, and sustaining the ecosystem services that both people and wildlife depend on across the rangelands.

Today, Amboseli Ecosystem Trust joined a tree planting exercise organized by the WRTI Amboseli Research Sub - Center at Oldoinyo Oibor Comprehensive School, adjacent to the ALOCA conservancies in Kimana.

The event is part of the institute's tree propagating and growing campaign in response to the presidential directive and targeted to plant 500 hundred seedlings of both indigenous and exotic species.

Beyond planting trees, the initiative also focused on creating awareness among students, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and inspiring the next generation to care for their natural heritage.

Women’s economic empowerment takes many forms, and across the Amboseli landscape, each area has unique needs, priorities, and potential pathways to economic empowerment.

In Lenkism area adjacent to the Nairabala Conservancy, the Enduata Women Group began their journey as part of our rangeland program, taking on the important role of managing the Lenkism grass seedbank.

Despite facing several setbacks along the way, the group has remained resilient, united, and committed to their shared purpose.

Yesterday marked a new milestone in their work, through the Mwanamke Bora Project, supported by Kenya Community Development Foundation, Amboseli Ecosystem Trust donated improved gala goat breeds to strengthen the groups economic activities.

The women group will fatten the goats, sell them after a period of time, share the profits, and reinvest by restocking more goat and create a sustainable cycle of income and growth.

Amboseli Ecosystem Trust will continue to support the women group by providing livestock vaccination and treatment services, as well as regular monitoring and technical guidance to ensure the enterprise remains productive, healthy, and profitable maximizing returns for the group’s collective benefit.

Community conservancies in Amboseli have a lot to offer and the Status of Conservancies Report 2026 seeks to capture and showcase this value in full.

Amboseli Ecosystem Trust convened a stakeholders input workshop bringing together community conservancy leaders from across the landscape, conservation partners and stakeholders to gather information for the review and development of Status of Conservancies Report 2026.

The review of the SOC comes five years after the first edition was publish in 2020 and whilst the ecosystem is at a defining moment.

Since the first edition, community conservancies have grown, adapted, and faced new challenges and investment opportunities have risen to support communities and wildlife conservation.

Supported by WWF-Kenya Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association and ifaw the report will highlight investment opportunities and showcase what conservancies truly mean for communities as spaces that strengthen livelihoods, secure grazing resources, enhance local governance, and create opportunities for sustainable development while safeguarding wildlife for future generations.

Beyond documenting progress, the report is a reflection of community voices, shared learning, and collective action.

Amboseli Ecosystem Trust is proud to announce the establishment of a new grass seedbank for the Nadumu Ilmarei Women Group in Lenkism, Eselenkei Group Ranch, supported by the Darwin Initiative and in partnership with Justdiggit.

Grass seedbanks have emerged as powerful tools for rangeland restoration while creating real economic opportunities for local women in the Amboseli landscape.

This marks the rise of a new face in community conservation, one where women are not just included, but actively leading the way.

Although women in Amboseli continue to face many challenges, AET is changing the narrative through impactful programs such as grass seed-banks, bead-work enterprises, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA), and the Conservancies Women Forum.

As the Nadumu Ilmarei women undergo training and the Lenkism seedbank takes shape, they join a growing network of strong Maasai women who are now powerful voices in the landscape advocating for greater inclusion in leadership and natural resource governance.

Healthy rangelands begin with strong partnerships with the local community to build ownership and sustainability of projects.

These partnerships are built through Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) ensuring communities are engaged before any project begins on the ground.

Amboseli Ecosystem Trust held a consultative meeting with community members from Enkongu Narok and Ilmarba Oldule zones to address the spread of the invasive Acacia nubica (Oldepe in Maa) which is steadily reducing grazing areas for both livestock and wildlife in the zones.

The project also intends to introduce the construction of stone lines to slow water runoff during the rains, helping the land retain moisture and allowing grasses to regenerate.

By creating space for dialogue, questions, and local input before implementation, AET ensures that communities are fully informed and actively involved in shaping the project.

The community gladly accepted the restoration interventions which are supported under the Darwin Initiative in partnership with Justdiggit Foundation, and assured their support in implementing the program, and also shared their thoughts and how best to roll out the activities.

This process builds local ownership, which is critical for the long-term success and sustainability of range-land restoration efforts.
