In celebration of the International Day of Peace themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World”, APaD, in partnership with Saferworld through the Austrian Development Agency funded Project, convened a powerful peace and awareness forum with the Lokiriama and North Pokot communities.
The event aimed to:
Foster unity across communities
Address harmful socio-cultural practices such as early and forced marriages, FGM, and GBV
Provide a platform for dialogue and resilience-building
We were honored by the presence of the Deputy County Commissioner, security teams, chiefs, peace directorate representatives, county administrators, and APaD Peace Ambassadors.
The communities expressed immense appreciation and outlined action points for continued peacebuilding, which will be shared soon.
This marks another significant milestone in building inclusive, peaceful, and resilient societies.

With funding from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia under the Karamoja STRONG Project, APaD, in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council Kenya Programme, conducted participatory community mapping exercises in Lokiriama Sub-County (Kotaruk, Lorengkipi, and Lokiriama), Pokot North Sub-County (Lokitonyala, Alale), and Moroto (Rupa and Katikekile sub-counties).

The exercise aimed to support community-led identification of key natural resources, climate-related vulnerabilities, conflict hotspots, and existing resilience mechanisms within the cross-border region.

Engaging a wide range of participants, including the Assistant County Commissioner, Chiefs, Village Administrators, youth, elders, and persons with disabilities, the process used round-table discussions and focus groups, disaggregated by gender, age, and livelihood.

Key objectives included:
✔️ Identifying peace-promoting local structures and stakeholders
✔️ Mapping available resources and gaps in services
✔️ Understanding the dual impact of conflict and climate change
✔️ Capturing the community’s priorities and pressing issues

These insights are crucial for shaping future interventions that are locally rooted, inclusive, and sustainable in promoting peace and climate resilience.

The success of the SPREAD Peace Project has become evident on the ground; guns have gone silent, trade routes have reopened, and hope is being restored along the Nadapal border. Co-funded by the European Union in Kenya and the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia and implemented with support from Saferworld in partnership with APaD, the project has helped foster trust, dialogue, and renewed cooperation between the Turkana and Toposa communities.

To mark one year of peaceful coexistence, a vibrant cross-border celebration was held in Nadapal, Kenya, led by Turkana County Governor H.E. Jeremiah Lomorukai and Eastern Equatoria State Governor H.E. Louis Lobong. The event brought together community elders, peace actors, local leaders, and citizens from both Kenya and South Sudan in a powerful display of unity among the Ateker people.

The peace accord has transformed daily life along the border. Communities now enjoy improved security, access to shared grazing lands, resumption of pastoralist and trade activities, and better access to healthcare and education. Residents have embraced the peace dividend, describing it as a long-awaited turning point for the region.

The event was more than a commemoration; it was a reaffirmation of commitment to sustained peace and inclusive development. With the active participation of national and county leadership, community stakeholders, and international partners, the celebration served as a reminder that when people come together with a shared purpose, meaningful change is not only possible, it’s inevitable

🌍 Exciting news from the SPREAD Project!
The Cross-Border Conflict Observatory Platform has officially been launched after a successful three-day workshop in Lokichogio Sub-County and Lokitaung, Turkana North Sub-County, under the EU Borderlands SPREAD project. Co-funded by the European Union in Kenya and the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia. This initiative aims to strengthen early warning and response systems along the Kenya–South Sudan border.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from national and county governments, civil society organizations, and local communities, empowering them to better monitor and address conflict triggers such as grazing land disputes and water resource competition. This platform will play a vital role in promoting peace and resilience in the region. 🌱
