The 6th Annual Civic Space Protection Summit 2026 is now underway in Makueni County, bringing together hundreds of voices to defend civic freedoms, amplify resilience, and shape Kenya’s democratic future under the theme “Voices Unbowed.”

Purpose: To protect civic space, strengthen grassroots movements, and ensure communities, journalists, artists, and youth remain central in shaping Kenya’s democracy.

Participants: Civil society organizations, human rights defenders, journalists, artists, youth leaders, and community monitors.

On August 27, 2026, the TEGO team led by Logelan Isaac officially distributed poultry farming assets and feed supplies to four local women groups in Lokichar Ward: , , , and . The distribution took place at the Turkana Eco-Green CBO offices following a thorough inspection by the team to verify that all items were fully present and accounted for before handover. The support was delivered under the Climate-Smart Labor Saving Agrotechnologies for Increased Resilience (C-LaSAIR) project—in partnership with the University of Eldoret—This initiative provides sustainable tools to boost local livelihoods and community climate resilience.
Lokichar ward Livestock officer Mr. was invited to guide the groups on how to feed their chicks going forward and also seek advice from him.

The support to Women groups include; A total of 300 vaccinated, one-month-old Improved Kienyeji layers were handed over, with each of the four groups receiving an equal allocation of 75 chicks.
To support growth, a total of 96 bags of 50kg feed were provided. Each group received 12 bags of Grower Mash, 10 bags of Layers Mash, and 2 bags of Chicks Mash.
Equipment & Water Storage. The groups were equipped with 12 round feeders (6kg) and 15 water drinkers, allocated equally with 3 feeders and 4 drinkers per group (with Mormor Self Help Group receiving 3 drinkers).

Additionally, each of the four groups received one 100L plastic water tank for clean water storage.

This effort aims to enhance household food security, build resilience against climate impacts, and foster sustainable income generation through labor-saving agricultural technologies.

Today, Turkana Eco-Green Organization (TEGO) led by Project Coordinator Betty Syk and project Finance Logelan Isaac was honored to host the monitoring team from the Haki Ni Yetu consortium for a comprehensive project review and field engagement. We reflected on the progress of our initiative, "Community Eco-Champions: Advancing Climate Justice and Women's Participation in Oil Operations" in Turkana South and East supported by .

Key Highlights & Impact (May – August 2026):500+ Community Members Engaged: Conducted major Community Rights Awareness Barazas across Kasuroi, Kapese, and Nakukulas to promote environmental rights, Free Prior and Informe¡d Consent (FPIC), and accountability in oil operations. 13 Community Eco-Champions Trained: Built local capacity within Community Land Management Committees (CLMCs) to observe, document, and report environmental and climate justice violations. Inclusive Civic Space: Amplified the leadership of women and youth in community assemblies under the decision trees, ensuring local voices drive land and resource governance.

TURKANA ECO-GREEN CBO PROGRESS AND IMPACT IN TURKANA

Today, the Turkana Eco-Green CBO team was on the ground at the Nakukulas Community Assembly in the heart of the South Lokichar Basin oil development area.

Our message to the community was clear: Every decision affecting our land, water, and future must be made transparently, under the decision tree, and guided strictly by Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).

During the session, community members raised critical concerns about the ongoing oil operations. For years, the community has only been promised economic perks—jobs, money, and revenue. Nobody has informed them of the real, long-term impacts of oil development on their environment, pastoralist livelihoods, health, and traditional lifestyle.

Decisions on land acquisitions, water usage, waste disposal, tree cutting, and potential displacement must never happen behind closed doors. They must be made publicly with the full, informed consent of the community assembly.

Harvest Season Has Begun in Achukule Irrigation Scheme at Lokichar

We are excited to celebrate another important milestone under the Climate-Smart Labour-Saving Agrotechnologies for Increased Resilience (C-LaSAIR) Project, implemented in partnership with the .
The groundnuts planted in April 2026 by the Achukule Small Farmers Group are now ready, and today marked the official start of harvesting.
This achievement reflects the commitment, hard work, and resilience of our farmers, as well as the impact of promoting climate-smart and labour-saving agricultural technologies in Turkana. Beyond increasing food production, the project is strengthening household resilience, improving livelihoods, and empowering communities to adapt to climate change.

Turkana Eco-Green Organisation (TEGO) CBO is proud to have supported this project to this stage. Seeing the first harvest is a testament to what strong partnerships and community participation can achieve.
We sincerely thank our implementation partner, the University of Eldoret, and all the farmers whose dedication has made this success possible. We look forward to even greater harvests and lasting impacts on food security and sustainable livelihoods across Turkana.

Turkana Eco-Green CBO will conduct a Community Rights Awareness session at the Nakukula Assembly. We invite all CBOs in Nakukula—including and —to join us in this crucial Civic Education series. We will educate our people about their environmental rights regarding the Oil and Gas Project in the South Lokichar Basin. .

Today, our project team—led by Betty Syk and —conducted a successful Community Rights Awareness session at Kapese Assembly in Turkana South.Our focus was on addressing environmental injustices, livelihood disruptions, environmental degradation, and human rights violations, with a strong emphasis on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). We sensitized the community on how to remain vigilant and firm regarding critical issues arising from oil and gas activities in the South Lokichar Basin, including:

Land acquisition and delayed compensation
Community displacement
Poor waste disposal
Gas flaring etc
The event recorded a tangible impact, empowering over 100 community members with the knowledge needed to constructively engage relevant stakeholders and demand accountability.

We appreciate the presence of government duty bearers who joined us, including the Assistant Chief Mrs JULLY AKAI for Kapese (representing the National Government) and the Village Administrator for Kapese Unit (representing the County Government).
