Empowering Communities Through sustainable Food Security and Livelihoods(Poultry farming and Groundnuts production)

Yesterday marked a significant step forward in our mission to enhance food security and livelihoods in Turkana. Turkana Eco-Green CBO, in partnership with the University of Eldoret under the C-LaSAIR Project, successfully facilitated a high-level training session for poultry rearing women groups in Lokichar Ward. These groups are from Villages of KAPESE, NALEMSEKON, KALODICHA AND NAYUKALALE

The training, was conducted by officers from the Turkana County Government, was comprehensive and covered key areas including:
âś… The importance of poultry rearing
âś… Poultry production best practices
âś… Feeds and feeding routines
âś… Disease prevention and vaccination
âś… Construction and management of chicken houses

The participants received intensive and intentional training to ensure they are fully equipped with the right skills ahead of the supply of chicks scheduled for next month.

In a continued effort to boost agricultural productivity, the team also conducted a training session for farmers at the Achukule Irrigation Scheme on Groundnuts production last week.

We are proud to work alongside our partners to build resilient communities through capacity building and sustainable agricultural practices.

Empowering Farmers, Ensuring Food Security: Groundnuts Training at Achukule

Turkana Eco-Green CBO, in collaboration with the Turkana County Government and the University of Eldoret, successfully conducted a comprehensive hands-on training session for the farmers of the Achukule Irrigation Scheme.

This initiative, under the C-LaSAIR Project, was designed to cover the entire groundnut value chain. We are incredibly grateful to the Ward Crop Officer for Lokichar Ward, whose expertise made this session highly practical. The officer led a live demonstration on proper planting techniques, emphasizing the critical spacing of 60cm by 15cm to ensure optimal yield.

The training covered
âś… Groundnut Production & Field Management
âś… Crop Water Management
âś… Harvesting & Post-Harvesting Best Practices
âś… Value Addition for Market Success

To ensure success from the start, we also conducted a germination test on the groundnut beans prior to planting day—because good harvests begin with quality seeds.

A huge thank you to the County Government of Turkana and University of Eldoret for being a steadfast partner in this project. We are building resilience and boosting agricultural productivity in our community.

We are pleased to share a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable agriculture. The installation of irrigation piping for the Achukule scheme is now complete, paving the way for efficient sprinkler irrigation.

Now that the irrigation piping is in place, we are wasting no time! The Achukule Irrigation Scheme is moving into its next critical phase: Production and Training.

🔹 Groundnuts planting are up next: We are preparing inputs for groundnut production, a high-value crop perfect for the region.
🔹 Empowering our Farmers: Training sessions will commence to equip farmers with the best management practices for groundnuts and other crops.
🔹 Diversifying Livelihoods: We are also kicking off specialized training for the groups identified for Poultry rearing, opening up new income streams for the community.
