In communities we serve, learning donkey welfare starts at the grassroots—and it starts in the language people understand.

Through culturally grounded engagement and vernacular-based sensitization, we work directly with community members in remote villages to build understanding around responsible donkey care and the dangers of the Donkey Hide Trade (DHT).

Using familiar examples, oral dialogue, and lived experience, community members learn what protects donkeys, what puts them at risk, and why speaking up matters.

As part of this effort, families are also sensitized on the IPDR Donkey Welfare Call Center—a trusted, accessible reporting and information channel that empowers communities to act when donkeys are threatened.

By equipping communities with knowledge in a language they understand, we strengthen local ownership, vigilance, and long-term protection.

Because when communities understand kindness, donkey welfare becomes everyone’s responsibility.

Our team paid a courtesy visit to the Turkana County Commissioner, during which we discussed a range of issues affecting pastoral communities in the county.

Key among the issues raised was the persistent challenge of cattle rustling in Merikuka, and the urgent need for the National Government to intervene, as livestock stolen in this area often cross the border into Ethiopia significantly complicating recovery efforts.

We cited a recent case in which 76 donkeys were stolen in September and are believed to have been moved across the border.

The County Commissioner expressed his support and committed to strengthening collaboration with us in combating Donkey Hide Trade (DHT) and related crimes.

A new week begins with smarter action and renewed commitment.

Through innovation, we are harnessing artificial intelligence to strengthen donkey protection, enhance public awareness, and support informed decision-making.

Our Punda Wangu platform—powered by AI—educates the public on all aspects of donkey welfare, ensuring knowledge is accessible, accurate, and practical for the communities that rely on donkeys every day.

As we step into this week, engage with Punda Wangu to learn, report concerns, and be part of a smarter, more responsive approach to donkey protection.

The donkey is better alive.

We held a consultative meeting with the Turkana County Chair of the Association of Donkey Owners of Kenya (ADOK).

During the meeting, we discussed a range of issues of mutual interest, key among them ADOK’s role in creating awareness among community members on the dangers facing donkeys and the urgent need for concerted efforts to combat illegal commercial slaughter.

We also deliberated on strategies to strengthen ADOK and expand its membership base in order to enhance targeted support and representation of donkey owners across Turkana County.

We were honoured to host a team from Mradi wa Hedhi, led by Dr. Rael Akoru and Ms. Bilha Akonah.

The team conducted a brief training for our project staff on the key components of menstrual health management and shared insights on various innovations they have developed to eradicate menstrual poverty, protect the girl child, and significantly reduce household expenditure on menstrual products.

We also held discussions on areas of converging interest and mutually agreed to explore and formalize a working relationship going forward.

Our Programs Coordinator, accompanied by the Project Officer, paid a courtesy visit to the Turkana County Director of Veterinary Services, where they engaged in discussions on various areas of shared interest.

Key among the issues discussed was the long-overdue formation of the County Animal Health Committee and the importance of ensuring the inclusion of organizations such as The Institute of pastoralism development and research-ipdr, which are at the forefront of promoting animal welfare—particularly donkey protection.

The team also emphasized the need for strict monitoring and regulation of licensing for animal hides handling to prevent the illegal donkey hides trade from continuing under camouflage.

Additionally, the meeting explored potential areas of partnership and collaboration for the year ahead, aimed at strengthening animal health governance and safeguarding the livelihoods of communities that depend on working animals.

Our team paid a courtesy visit to the Turkana County Police Commander, where we held constructive discussions on areas of mutual interest, with particular focus on the enforcement of the ban on commercial donkey slaughter and the fight against the illegal donkey hides trade.

We underscored the crucial role of the National Police Service in enforcing this ban and protecting both animal welfare and community livelihoods.

The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration for the year ahead, including information sharing, coordinated enforcement actions, and community sensitization initiatives.

These efforts aim to safeguard donkeys and the pastoralist communities that depend on them, ultimately ensuring a life worth living for both the animals and the people they support.

Donkey Welfare in Turkana: IPDR’s Ongoing Commitment

In 2009, Turkana County had an estimated 1.2 million donkeys. Today, fewer than 400,000 remain, a sharp decline largely driven by the Donkey Hide Trade (DHT) and related welfare challenges that threaten pastoral livelihoods.

In response, IPDR, through the support of The Brooke East Africa , continues to play an active role in improving donkey welfare and countering DHT across Turkana County.

In early 2025, IPDR established the Donkey Welfare Call Center, a 24/7 toll-free service accessible via 0800 000 890, enabling donkey owners and community members to report welfare concerns, theft, and trafficking.

To date, the Call Center has processed over 14,000 donkey welfare–related calls. Since January 2025, more than 300 stolen donkeys have been recovered through coordinated efforts led via the Call Center. IPDR has also reached over 10,000 donkey owners through welfare awareness and support initiatives, with numbers continuing to rise. In the last quarter of 2025 alone, over 100 donkeys received veterinary support through IPDR interventions.

These actions reflect IPDR’s sustained commitment—through the support of The Brooke East Africa —to protect working donkeys, strengthen community reporting systems, and safeguard livelihoods in Turkana County.

If you witness donkey theft, trafficking, injury, or neglect, report immediately.

Reach us on 0800 000 890.

Every call helps protect donkeys and the livelihoods that depend on them.

The SDTI Donkey Welfare Call Center was established by IPDR to provide timely guidance, support, and interventions across communities — ensuring donkeys and foals get the care they need when it matters most.

This first Foal Friday of 2026, we want to remind you that early reporting or reaching out for guidance on care, handling, or any welfare concern reduces risk and improves outcomes.

If you are reading this and know anyone who owns donkeys and foals and could benefit from this information, please send them our way. Let them reach out to learn how best they can benefit from the support and guidance we provide.

For any concerns or questions whatsoever, call our toll-free 0800 000 890.
