The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st March the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

This day was celebrated today at Mokowe Old Jetty, Lamu County organised by the Kenya Forest Service where 8,000 seedlings were planted.

In his remarks, He highlighted that the 15 billion tree growing campaign is strategy that Kenya is using to tackle the environmental challenges. He reiterated the importance of all stakeholders; both state and non state organs in achieving the 30% tree cover by 2032.

All Kenyans are urged to join hands in the villages and homes to plant and grow trees in their environs to secure a cleaner and safer environment

The event was also attended by County Government of Lamu, NEMA, WWF, KEFRI, Save Lamu, Community Forest Association - CFA, CBOs, Students and members of the community.

The joint taskforce came together with a similar goal working towards a better and safe Environment, coming up with Sustainable projects and programs to ensure Sustainable Development.

With the Area MCA, Mkomani Ward, Hon. Shekhuna Abbas, Today we had the opportunity to clean the Sea front at Kanu . Our honourable's intention is to make sure the beach is clean and tidy. We won’t have a society if we destroy the Environment.
