🌊 AFRICA MAKES HISTORY: MOMBASA HOSTS THE FIRST-EVER OCEAN CONFERENCE ON AFRICAN SOIL
A historic chapter for Africa’s blue economy was written in Mombasa from 16th–18th June 2026. For the first time ever, the global Our Ocean Conference was hosted on African soil and Lamu Environment Foundation proudly stood with Kenya as it welcomed 6,000+ delegates from 100+ nations.
Under the theme "Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future," Kenya was the natural host, chosen for its strategic position along the biodiversity-rich Western Indian Ocean, its forward-thinking Blue Economy Strategy, and proven leadership in mangrove restoration. This signaled a clear shift: Africa is now a central architect of ocean governance, not a passive observer.
The conversations tackled urgent crises climate-driven warming, plastic pollution, collapsing fish stocks, illegal fishing, and maritime security while emphasising the balance between economic growth and ecological health.
The results were concrete and measurable. A total of 6.4 billion dollars in new commitments was announced, alongside the adoption of the Mombasa Declaration a binding pledge signed by 14 nations to aggressively combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing Kenya led by example, committing 200 million dollars to install electronic monitoring systems across all its industrial fishing vessels. Additionally, nine African governments expanded their marine protected areas, delivering a powerful boost to the global 30x30 conservation goal of safeguarding 30 percent of the planet’s oceans by 2030.
As Deputy President Kindiki eloquently reminded us, we carry a profound duty to return the ocean to our children cleaner and more resilient. With bold pledges and a unified voice, Africa proved that the blue revolution has a new heartbeat steady, resolute, and rising from the shores of Mombasa. 🌊🇰🇪

When We Care for Nature, Magic Happens – Green Turtle Nests on Kizingo Beach

A remarkable development on Kizingo Beach. Following our earlier update from the Kizingo project, we are thrilled to share that a Green Turtle has been sighted and a nesting site has been identified along Kizingo Beach. This site was seen and reported by Mzee Mahoud Hajj, turtle ranger for LaMCoT. 🎉

This is more than just one nest. It is a sign of progress. For months, the Kizingo project has worked quietly to protect coastal habitats, reduce disturbance, and raise awareness among residents. Daily beach clean‑up activities by the beach cleaners have kept the shoreline safe and welcoming for marine life. Now, nature is responding. When we take good care of our environment – from removing plastic to guarding nests – magic things happen. And this is that magic unfolding before our eyes. ✨🌿

The nest lies within the high water mark area, so no relocation is needed. Rangers are monitoring it daily. While a typical nest takes about 45 days to hatch, the ongoing rains will extend that period, giving us even more time to celebrate and protect this gift. 🙌

👩‍👧‍👦 Local heroes, global impact: How LEF is turning grassroots action into ocean conservation 🌿
Plastic doesn't just disappear. It chokes mangroves, kills sea turtles, and ends up in the fish we eat. But in Lamu, local action + global support = real solutions.
LEF backs grassroots heroes who build lasting systems. A huge thank you to – our key partner across all projects.
🕰️ Past wins:
🐢 Bahari Moja (Mkokoni) – With support from & , they cleaned beaches, set up a sorting facility, engaged 240 volunteers, collected 5+ tonnes of waste, and sent plastics to Flipflop for a second life. Result: 79 sea turtle nests in one year.
🤝 Fanya Usafi Coalition – (Amu) + (Shella) collected 30+ tonnes of plastic from beaches and town streets. All went to Flipflop to become furniture & art – a true circular economy.
🔥 CURRENT: LaMCoT Kizingo
LEF supports LaMCoT along Kipungani–Shella, focused on Kizingo Beach. After a year of clean-ups, turtles are returning – a third nest with 117 eggs! Private residents & hotels are actively funding this project.
🌍 The engine: Women & youth groups LEF empowers with training & funding. They clean beaches & build futures.
⚠️ Urgent: 44 tonnes sounds like a lot, but it's a drop. Without funding, beaches fill again, turtles lose nests, plastic keeps coming.

🌿 Mangroves: How LEF is turning climate action into global impact 🌊
Did you know? Mangroves can store up to 4x more carbon than tropical rainforests. They defend our shores from storms, naturally filter our water, and serve as vital nurseries for the fish that feed our families. 🐟💙
🌍 A global solution, rooted in Lamu
The Paris Agreement, a landmark international treaty on climate change adopted by 195 countries, set the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. A key part of this agreement encourages the conservation and enhancement of carbon sinks, including forests and coastal ecosystems like mangroves.
That's where LEF comes in. By protecting and restoring Lamu's mangroves, we are directly supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement. And through carbon credits, this local action can have a global impact.
💚 Carbon credits: Turning conservation into sustainable income
Every time a company emits CO₂, they can purchase a carbon credit to offset their footprint. Verified projects, like the restoration of mangroves, can sell these credits. The carbon captured by the mangroves is measured, converted into credits, and sold on global markets. The revenue then flows back to the local communities who protect and restore these forests.
Kenya is a leader in this space, proving that community-led mangrove conservation can be highly effective.

🐢 A sad discovery on the shore — but we walk it together.
This week, the LaMCoT rangers and beach cleaners held their weekly feedback meeting with the LaMCoT officials. The news was quiet: no new nests have been laid.
But then came the hard part.
At Area No. 5 – Mkadini – they found a young green turtle. Her shell measured just 32cm long and 29cm wide. A juvenile. So much life ahead of her.
She was already gone. Badly wounded on her underside (the plastron). She had been dead for some time, and the smell was heavy. The rangers believe a spear gun caused her injury.
A single moment. A life lost. It breaks our hearts.
But here is what gives us hope:
LaMCoT has officially started using the Earth Ranger app. It's a simple, honest way for rangers to record what they find – the good and the painful. It helps them remember exactly where and when an incident happened, so they can watch those waters more carefully tomorrow.
No fancy technology talk. Just people who care, using a small tool to protect these ancient creatures.
LEF is proud to fund LaMCoT for this project. We are not the ones on the beach every day – but we stand behind those who are.

Thanks to the investments from our local stakeholders hotels, guesthouses, eco-lodges, and residents of Kizingo (Lamu Marine Conservation Trust) has expanded its mission. Your contributions do not just fund cleanups.

🐢 Why We Show Up: A Month on Kizingo Project - Kipungani

This January, our partner@lamcot_lamu removed 541 kilograms of marine debris from Kizingo Beach. Plastic, glass, and discarded footwear washed in by currents, left by human hands.
The work isn’t glamorous. Early mornings. Night patrols in darkness. But here’s what keeps them going:
• Documenting injured green turtles for KWS
• Staying with stranded dolphins
• Learning where debris collects and where nests are most at risk
This is what conservation looks like: persistent presence, not perfect solutions.
Lamu holds some of East Africa’s most critical sea turtle nesting grounds. Every kilo removed is one less hazard. Every patrol is a deterrent.

🌊 2025 in Review: The Kizingo Beach Restoration Project 🌊

Last year marked a turning point for Kizingo Beach. Through unwavering community effort and strategic partnership with , we didn't just clean a shoreline we catalyzed an ecological and economic revival.

✅ By The Numbers:

1. 6,461 kg of waste removed from our coast.

2. 4,161 kg of plastic rescued and fed into our local circular economy.

3. Four (4) Sea Turtle Nests recorded for the first time in years—a powerful sign of habitat recovery.

This success was built on a community-first model. Every role, from turtle ranger to beach cleaner, was filled by Kipungani residents, ensuring lasting stewardship and local economic benefit.

In 2025, we listened, adapted, and elevated our approach. Partnering with LaMCoT, we redesigned operations for maximum transparency and scientific rigor, implementing:
🔬 The Earth Ranger App for precise wildlife monitoring.
📈 Daily cleaning protocols and data-driven monthly reports.
🤝 Active stakeholder engagement via supervisory visits and real-time communication.

We also deepened our impact through community-led action and training:
🐢 Held community engagement forums in Kipungani to raise awareness on turtle protection and coastal stewardship.
📱 Conducted specialized training with for our turtle rangers and beach cleaners, covering:

1. Nest and bycatch protocols

2. GPS and mobile monitoring app use

3. Turtle sighting reporting

4. Soil testing and temperature logger deployment

These efforts strengthened local capacity and ensured our conservation approach was both scientific and sustainable.
