Under the Thrive Safe Project, we successfully held a community baraza in Witu guided by the theme: “Digital Respect Through Our Culture: Community Ownership of Online Safety.”

The session brought together elders, youth, and community leaders to reflect on how our traditional values of respect, Ubuntu, and collective responsibility can guide our behavior in the digital space. Through storytelling, elders shared how respect and conflict resolution were handled in the past, while youth highlighted the realities of online life today.

Together, we affirmed that the internet is our new village, and the same values that guided us before must guide us online. The community also developed a Digital Values Charter to promote dignity, privacy, and responsible engagement.

The Thrive Safe Project convened a meaningful community baraza in Hindi under the theme: “Digital Respect Through Our Culture.”

This baraza created a safe space for intergenerational dialogue, where elders and youth exchanged perspectives on respect, communication, and the impact of online behavior. Discussions emphasized that digital harm is not just individual—it affects families and the entire community.

Participants explored cultural approaches to resolving conflict through dialogue rather than public shaming, and committed to promoting safe, respectful online spaces. The session reinforced that digital safety is a shared responsibility rooted in our culture.

In Mpeketoni Mokowe Action Group through the Thrive Safe Project held a powerful community baraza focused on strengthening cultural values in the digital age under the theme: “Community Ownership of Online Safety.”

The baraza highlighted how online spaces mirror our community, and how harmful behaviors such as spreading rumors or sharing private information go against our cultural principles. Through guided discussions and group activities, participants translated values like respect, privacy, and responsibility into practical digital actions.

The community collectively agreed to uphold a Digital Values Charter, committing to protect dignity, resolve conflicts peacefully, and support one another both offline and online.

Mokowe Action Youth Group proudly joined the world in commemorating the International Day of Forests.

As a youth-led organization based in Lamu, we recognize the vital role forests play in sustaining our communities and strengthening our local economy. Forests are not just natural spaces they are sources of livelihood, providing food, medicine, fuel, and supporting key sectors like fishing, farming, and tourism.

During this important day, we reflected on the need to protect and preserve our forests for present and future generations. As young people, we are committed to championing environmental conservation, raising awareness, and taking action to safeguard these ecosystems from degradation.

Together, we can build a future where nature and communities thrive side by side.

Early this week, we conducted a training on safe reporting mechanisms in Mpeketoni under the Thrive Safe Project. The session focused on educating community members, especially women and youth, on how to safely, confidentially, and responsibly report cases of technology-facilitated gender-based violence and other online harms. Participants were guided on available reporting channels, survivor-centered approaches, and the importance of protecting privacy and dignity when reporting incidents. The activity strengthened community awareness and built confidence in using safe reporting pathways to address digital violence. 🇪🇺

Earlier this week, Mokowe Action Group successfully wrapped up a powerful two-day session under the Project, focusing on digital safety and online rights. 💻✨

Participants were equipped with practical skills to protect themselves online, including how to use 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) to secure their accounts. We also engaged with survivors of TFGBV, giving them a safe space to share their experiences and helping us understand the real challenges faced within our community.

Empowering women and youth with knowledge and support is a step toward creating a safer online space for all. 🌐💙

Today in Mpeketoni, Mokowe Action Group continued its commitment to creating safer online spaces for young people, women, and community members under the Thrive Safe Project.
As digital spaces grow, so do the risks—ranging from cyberbullying, impersonation, online harassment, scams, and the non-consensual sharing of images. Many community members are active online yet unaware of their rights or how to protect themselves.

Our session focused on:
🔹 Understanding digital rights and personal data protection
🔹 How to identify and report cases of online harassment
🔹 Practical ways to stay safe on social platforms
🔹 Steps to collect evidence when faced with tech-facilitated GBV
🔹 Strengthening community awareness on responsible and respectful online behaviour

The Mpeketoni participants engaged deeply in discussions, shared real experiences, and committed to being digital safety ambassadors in their circles. Every training session reminds us that empowerment begins with knowledge — and safer communities start with informed individuals.

As Mokowe Action Group, we remain dedicated to ensuring that no one in Lamu County is left behind in understanding their digital rights and knowing how to navigate online spaces safely and confidently.

Together, we are building a resilient, aware, and digitally safe Mpeketoni.

Yesterday, we wrapped up the session by focusing on reporting mechanisms and how to collect digital evidence when faced with online harassment, cyberbullying, or any form of Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV).
Participants were guided on practical steps for documenting incidents, preserving screenshots, securing messages, and understanding where and how to report cases both online and at local authorities.

This knowledge is essential in strengthening community resilience and ensuring that individuals are not only aware of their rights but also equipped with the tools to seek justice and support when needed.

Mokowe Action Group remains committed to creating safer, informed, and empowered digital communities across Lamu County under the TrustLab Project.
