30 years of quality eyecare! 👁️ The commonest cause of blindness is cataract. It is a charitable institution and an affordable contribution only.

One in every hundred Kenyans are blind. 80% of this blindness is avoidable, ie it could have been prevented or is still treatable. This clouding of the focusing lens inside the eye is solved with a 15 minute operation. The main reason that so many people suffer avoidable blindness is lack of quality eye care which people can reach. The Kwale District Eye Centre (KDEC) was set up in 1993 to provide

affordable, accessible, comprehensive eye care to the community. It was started by Dr H E Roberts MBE FRCOphth FEACO who recognized the need for eye care in the district. Since 1993, the KDEC has gone from strength to strength. It has grown from a small and modest structure to an impressive eye care clinic that meets international standards and regulations. The KDEC began with a staff of 3 which has grown over the years into a team of almost 50 members. To date, over 300,000 patients have been seen by the Kwale District Eye Centre both at the clinic and out on the field.

Alice came to Kwale Eye Centre for a routine examination. 👩🏽 She is a lovely example of why we encourage everyone, at every age, to have their eyes checked. 💙

During her examination, we discovered a mild eye allergy. 👁️ Eye allergies are very common and are usually not sight-threatening, but they can cause persistent itching, watering and irritation. 😣 For children in particular, that discomfort can interfere with reading, concentration, learning and everyday activities. 📚

Once you know what is causing the problem, it can be properly managed. ✅💊
