The Hijabi Mentorship Program A one-stop grassroots centre where women & girls can access information & services on SRHR and GBV

The Hijabi Mentorship Program (THMP) is a young women-led registered Community Based Organization formed in 2018 to respond to champions for gender justice in under-served communities in Kwale County. The organization works solely within Kwale County and seeks to;

1. To contribute to prevention of SGBV, effective response and increased support for survivors of SGBV
2. To promote enjoyment of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) by girls and women
3. To increase access to economic resources and opportunities among women and young people
4. To enhance women and youth participation in anti-radicalization peace building processes at community level
5. To build a sustainable organization that is effective and efficient in delivering its mandate

The organization exists to empower women and girls by creating enabling environments for them and supporting them with information and resources to ensure that they become positive, and active drivers of change in their own lives. Our current area of focus is Kwale County that covers an area of 8267 km2. The county has a population of 866,820 (female-441,681, male-425,121 and intersex-18) according to the latest Kenya census results (2019). 85.4% of the community resides in the rural areas. We target women, girls and young people irrespective of their culture, faith/religion. Our Vision: A society that empowers women and girls, upholds and protects their fundamental rights and freedoms, and guarantees equal access to opportunities and resource development

Accountability is not a report on a shelf. It is what happens when commitments become action.

For communities, especially women and girls, policies and laws only matter when they translate into safer communities, responsive institutions, meaningful participation, and access to justice.

That is why this work is essential.

The KIOS-supported initiative creates space for citizens to understand their rights, engage with decision-makers, question gaps in implementation, and demand accountability for the commitments made to advance gender justice and human rights in Kwale County.

Because accountability cannot be left to institutions alone. Communities must have the knowledge, platforms, and power to ask: What was promised? What has been done? And who is responsible for what comes next?

We are moving from commitments to change, one conversation, one community, and one accountable institution at a time.

Strong institutions don't just exist. They work.

Gender justice requires systems that are clear, responsive, coordinated, and accountable. From frontline services to county policies and community structures, every part of the system has a role to play.

Strengthening these systems means building the capacity to respond effectively, closing gaps in implementation, and creating mechanisms that communities can trust.

Because sustainable change is not built on individual efforts alone. It is built into the systems that remain long after a project ends.

A referral pathway should never become another barrier to justice.

For survivors of GBV, support must be timely, coordinated, and accessible, from the first disclosure to medical care, psychosocial support, legal assistance, and protection.

Strengthening referral pathways means strengthening the connections between the people and institutions survivors depend on. No survivor should have to tell their story repeatedly, navigate a fragmented system alone, or be left wondering where to go next.

Accountability also means ensuring that the systems around survivors work together.

Justice Was Served… But Healing Still Has No Budget. 💛

We visited a grandmother in Shimba Hills, a woman raising two child survivors whose cases were recently concluded in court. Justice was delivered. But what we found at home reminded us that justice on paper is only the beginning.

One survivor is a child living with Autism and epilepsy.
She has never received the head imaging needed for proper treatment.
Her autism assessment was last done in 2009.
Her eyesight is deteriorating.
Her disability documentation is outdated.
And she is showing signs of PTSD, with no access to a trauma specialist.

The second survivor is a young girl who has been trying to rebuild her life after counseling at a rescue centre. She is healing, but she still needs steady emotional support and a safe environment.

Their guardian, a single woman doing her best, lives on unstable income from a tiny salon business. She cannot consistently pay rent. She cannot afford medical transport. She cannot leave the house for long because the child with epilepsy needs constant supervision.

Justice was delivered in the courtroom, but survival is being fought in the home.

These children need:
✨ A fresh autism assessment
✨ Neurological imaging
✨ Updated disability and eye health evaluations
✨ Regular therapy and trauma counselling
✨ Consistent medical access
✨ A financially stable guardian who can support them

This is where the system ends, and where we must begin.

We are fundraising to support:
• Medical imaging and specialized assessments
• Trauma-focused therapy for both survivors
• Transport for clinic visits
• Emergency rent support
• Skills training for the guardian
• A structured care plan that protects these children long after court cases close

Healing should not depend on poverty. Recovery should not depend on chance.
