And let me tell you youth showed up.

Young people are actively participating in the ongoing public participation sessions in Kwale County, and this is exactly what we envisioned through our ongoing public participation trainings under the INUA-IG Project.

Funded by the European Union in Kenya under the Meaningful Engagement Transformative Action (META) programme, the project has been equipping young people with practical skills on budget-making processes, meaningful advocacy, and soft approaches to advocacy.

Today, we are witnessing the impact, young people are no longer just asking to be heard they are showing up, engaging, and demanding to be meaningfully involved in decisions that affect their lives and communities.

Sisi Pia Tupo| Happy International Youth Day

Today, we joined fellow young people and partners in Kwale County for the pre-celebrations of International Youth Day, a moment to celebrate the energy, ideas, and contributions of young people in shaping our communities.

We had the opportunity to showcase the work we are doing as a youth-led initiative, championing youth development, meaningful participation, climate action, governance, and creating spaces where young people can be heard and take action.

We are proud to be part of a growing movement that is bringing the global youth agenda into our local context turning global conversations into practical action within our communities.

Does your county have a climate budget? If it does, who is benefiting from it? And if it doesn’t, how can we claim to be serious about responding to the climate crisis?

The truth is that women and girls are among the most affected by climate change, yet they remain underrepresented in climate decision-making and have limited access to climate finance. Gender-responsive climate funding is not about creating special treatment it’s about ensuring that those on the frontlines have the resources, opportunities, and voice to lead climate action.

Through the IMARA Project under the Sikiliza Sauti Yetu Dunia Inaita initiative, funded by the European Union in Kenya and implemented by WeWorld in partnership with OAY, CRAWN Trust, and Barnfonden, we are nurturing the next generation of environmental champions. Girls Lead, Green Shift is our commitment to ensuring that girls and young women not only participate in climate conversations but also understand, access, and influence climate funding. The future of climate action must be inclusive, equitable, and led by those whose voices have been overlooked for far too long.

Mkongani gave us a spark and the conversation challenged a common assumption.

Today, through the INUA-IG Project funded by the European Union in Kenya through Femnet Secretariat in partnership with SDGs Kenya Forum and WECF International we engaged young people from Mkongani Ward on digital rights and meaningful participation in governance.

One truth emerged: young people are not absent because they fear participation they are absent because governance spaces are not always accommodative. They have the knowledge, the ideas, and the capacity to lead. What they need are spaces that genuinely welcome and value their contributions.

We were honored to be joined by the MCA for Mkongani Ward and the Ward Administrator, who highlighted existing opportunities for young people to actively engage in governance and decision-making.

The future of inclusive governance depends on creating spaces where young people don’t just attend they influence.

Are young people truly free to speak, participate, and influence decisions that shape their future?

These were the questions at the heart of our civic dialogue in Matuga Sub-County, where 80 young people came together to discuss the barriers preventing meaningful participation in governance and democracy. Many participants expressed concerns over shrinking freedom of expression online, limited civic spaces, and how digital illiteracy continues to exclude many young people from engaging in important public conversations.

To bridge the gap between young people and decision-makers, we brought together the Area Chief, the Director of Youth Affairs (Kwale County), the Village Administrator, and aspiring Youth MCA candidates for an open and honest conversation. The dialogue created a platform for listening, learning, and identifying practical solutions to strengthen youth participation both offline and in digital spaces.

This engagement was implemented under the INUA-IG Project, funded by the European Union in Kenya through the Meaningful Engagement, Transformative Action (META) initiative. Femnet Secretariat

Quarter One of the INUA-IG Project may have been brief, but it has delivered remarkable progress and inspiring success stories.

Today, we held a Focus Group Discussion with our trained Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) and young women who participated in the boot camps to reflect on Quarter One achievements, monitor progress, and gather valuable feedback on the project’s impact.

The results are encouraging! Our TOTs are already applying the knowledge and skills gained through the project to drive positive change in their communities.

Join Tulinde Future Yetu Initiative (TFYI) on 28th July 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, for a Virtual Structured Dialogue bringing together young people from across the Coast region to discuss the barriers to meaningful participation in governance and elections ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The session will be moderated by Georgina Obonyo, Secretary General of the National Steering Committee, alongside panelists Sumeiya Omar, Fatuma Litsesso, and Yusuf Hajj.

This dialogue is part of the Inclusive Dialogue Mechanism (IDM) under the Meaningful Engagement, Transformative Action (META) Programme, funded by the European Union in Kenya and implemented by Femnet Secretariat in partnership with the SDGs Kenya Forum and WECF International.

Tulinde Future Yetu Initiative (TFYI) was honored to participate in the Two-Day Capacity-Building Workshop on Promoting Local Youth Actions to Advance SDG Localization and Youth Well-being, organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in collaboration with local and international partners. Represented by our Executive Director, the workshop provided a valuable platform for young leaders and stakeholders to strengthen their capacity, exchange experiences, and explore practical approaches to advancing youth well-being and accelerating SDG localization.

A key highlight was the participation of H.E. Kombo, Deputy Governor of Kwale County, who shared the county government’s initiatives and investments aimed at empowering young people through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and inclusive governance. His remarks reaffirmed the importance of partnerships in creating opportunities for youth to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
