Across policy, governance, and peacebuilding, the difference between being heard and having influence can determine whether youth participation changes decisions, or simply informs them.

Justice is often discussed through laws, institutions and courtrooms. But understanding how communities experience conflict also means paying attention to the spaces where people live, work and interact.

Community-based approaches to dispute resolution offer an important perspective: resolving conflict can involve more than determining who is right or wrong. It can also involve rebuilding trust, maintaining relationships and creating conditions for people to continue living together peacefully.

The challenge is ensuring that these processes remain fair, inclusive and accountable.

So, what does justice look like when it begins within the community?

Ubuntu Nexus was proud to be represented at the 11th USIU-Africa Criminology and Criminal Justice Conference by our Research Lead, Benjamin who presented a paper exploring how the label "thief" can become a lifelong identity for young offenders based on our article published earlier this year. The paper challenged us to examine whether our justice systems truly create room for dignity, accountability, and reintegration.

Two days of rich dialogue brought together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from Kenya, the United States, Nigeria, India, Botswana, Azerbaijan and beyond, opened by a powerful keynote from Prof. PLO Lumumba on rethinking inherited legal frameworks for African societies and the Global South.

We're grateful for this opportunity and remain committed to contributing to conversations shaping the future of criminal justice.

Can a conversation change the way we think about justice?

At the end of our first Perspectives on Justice conversation, we asked one participant whether the discussion had changed her understanding of what justice means in practice.

She shared that she had always understood justice as something rooted in equity and shaped by context. While that belief remained, the conversation led her to recognise that equality and human dignity are equally fundamental to how justice should be understood.

This is exactly why these conversations matter.

The goal is to create space where perspectives are examined, challenged, refined, and sometimes expanded through dialogue.

Every conversation leaves us with new questions, new insights, a reminder that justice is far more complex than we often assume, and a deeper appreciation for why this campaign matters.

What stayed with our participants after Conversation 1? 💡

When we asked one participant to describe the conversation in a single word, they chose “stimulating.”

Another reflected on what they believe would make Kenya feel more just, not only stronger legal systems, but also addressing systemic inequalities, tackling corruption, and building institutions that are accountable to the people they serve.

These reflections capture exactly why the Perspectives on Justice Campaign exists - to create spaces where young people can share how they understand justice and the society they want to live in, think critically and challenge assumptions.
