AYAN Kenya is an independent Kenyan non-governmental organization that was established with the view of involving young people in participation and contribution towards an enabling environment that will foster the empowerment of adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights. AYAN Kenya adopted a holistic approach, advocating for the promotion and protection of health rights while

still maintaining a focus on youth, women, girls and SGM

We work on broader health and human rights issues in Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay and Migori Counties with the objective to advocate for the Implementation of Policies, legislation and Litigation that promotes SRHR for adolescents, young women and SGM groups in Kenya.

We recently had a great moment to reflect on our journey with one of our key donors and it was both affirming and energizing.

Over the past period, this partnership has enabled us to grow, strengthen our work, and deepen our impact in advancing inclusive healthcare and community support. What stands out most is the shared commitment to authenticity, trust, and meaningful change.

We’re grateful for partners who walk the journey with us not just in supporting the work, but in believing in the vision and the communities we serve.

Here’s to continued collaboration, learning, and impact.

Together for a 🌍💜

On this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, AYAN Kenya joined partners, young people, and stakeholders at the Nyalenda Period Festival to champion menstrual health, dignity, and justice for all.

The festival created a powerful space for dialogue and learning through breakout sessions and plenaries that explored key issues affecting girls and young women, including period poverty and access to menstrual products, male involvement in menstrual health, environmental sustainability and menstrual waste management, policy advocacy, legal education and rights awareness, and the role of data, AI, and technology in advancing menstrual hygiene management.

These conversations reaffirmed a simple truth: menstrual health is not only a health issue, but a matter of dignity, equality, education, human rights, and social justice.

Girls also received dignity kits to support safe and confident menstrual management, ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.

AYAN Kenya remains committed to advancing menstrual equity, breaking stigma, and strengthening partnerships for a future where every girl can menstruate with dignity, confidence, and pride.

We participated in the launch of the Beyond Bias Project, an initiative led by Dreams Redefined Organization and Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) under the META Program.

The engagement brought together government representatives, youth-led organizations, women-led groups, and other stakeholders to discuss strengthening accountability and inclusion in the finalization and operationalization process of the Kisumu County Gender and Equity Bill 2024.

The discussions highlighted the importance of collective action, meaningful youth participation, and partnerships in advancing gender-responsive governance within Kisumu County. It was encouraging to hear commitments towards ensuring the Bill progresses through public participation across all the seven sub-counties.

We appreciate spaces that amplify young people’s voices and promote collaboration towards gender equity, accountability, and inclusive leadership in our communities.

AYAN Kenya participated in the Adolescent & Young People (AYP) Technical Working Group meeting held at Kisumu County Referral Hospital, officiated by the County Commissioner. The forum convened county leaders, civil society, and youth-led organizations to advance the health and wellbeing of adolescents and young people.

The meeting reviewed progress on AYP interventions, identified key gaps, and strengthened coordination among partners. Priority discussions included:
• Adolescent SRHR and the “triple threats”
• Mental health support for young people
• Meaningful youth participation in decision-making
• Prevention of teenage pregnancies
• Access to youth-friendly services
• HIV prevention and care
• Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE)
• Economic empowerment for young people

Stakeholders shared program updates, highlighted emerging issues across sub-counties, and explored strategies to strengthen referral systems, community engagement, and accountability in service delivery.

The meeting provided a critical space for cross-learning, collaboration, and aligning efforts to enhance impact and sustainability of youth-focused programs in Kisumu County.

We remain committed to advancing evidence-based, youth-centered approaches that promote the rights, health, dignity, and empowerment of adolescents and young people.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

At AYAN Kenya, we recognize that mental health is not a luxury, it is a fundamental human right. Every young person deserves access to safe spaces, support systems, and quality mental health services without stigma or discrimination.

This month, we stand with communities to:
• Break the silence around mental health
• Promote healing, resilience, and dignity
• Advocate for accessible and inclusive mental health care

Let’s check in with ourselves and each other. A simple conversation can save a life.

Kenya’s Court of Appeal has overturned the earlier ruling that recognized abortion as a constitutional right.

What does this mean?

⚖️ Abortion is now more strictly limited under Article 26(4) of the Constitution.

🏥 However, Post-Abortion Care (PAC) remains essential, legal, and life-saving healthcare. It includes treatment for complications, counseling, and access to contraception.

No one should be denied emergency care.

We call for clarity, protection of healthcare providers, and continued access to quality, stigma-free reproductive health services.
