MDS–Kenya is making steady progress in strengthening structured dialogue across Kenya Mennonite Church Diocesan network. To date, strategic engagements have been conducted with the Southern, Lakesite,, Siaya, Kisumu East, and Nairobi Dioceses.

The discussions focused on access to grants and donation opportunities, establishing sustainable income-generating investment options, and mapping strategic development partners. Discussions also emphasized the formation of consortia to enhance collaboration, resource mobilization, and collective impact in advancing peacebuilding and social development initiatives.

This process will culminate in the development and adoption of contextualized Diocesan Peace and Social Development Plans, which will provide structured, locally responsive frameworks to guide priority setting, partnership engagement, resource mobilization, and implementation at the Diocesan level.

MDS–Kenya Strengthens Diocesan Structures to Advance Peacebuilding and Social Development

MDS–Kenya continues to strengthen its Diocesan governance and operational structures as a strategic approach to advancing sustainable peacebuilding and holistic social development.

In this regard, MDS–Kenya convened structured strategic engagement meetings with the Southern and Lakesite Dioceses to enhance alignment, coordination, and effectiveness of development interventions at the Diocesan level.

The engagements provided a participatory platform for Diocesan Project Management Committee to conduct a situational reflection on key development priorities, assess existing opportunities, and map available institutional, human, and community resources. This process aimed to strengthen Diocesan ownership, improve strategic focus, and enhance the integration of peacebuilding and social development initiatives within Diocesan systems.

A key outcome of the meetings was the resolution to develop Diocese-specific Development Plans. These plans will serve as strategic frameworks to guide the design, prioritization, implementation, and monitoring of context-relevant development interventions at the Diocesan level, while ensuring alignment with the broader mission and strategic direction of MDS–Kenya.

The engagements further recognized the importance of strengthening and leveraging strategic partnerships with the government institutions and development partners. Emphasis was placed on enhancing project integration and facilitating the formation of strategic consortia to increase resource mobilization, coordination, and collective impact.

Additionally, the meetings resulted in the identification and designation of Social Development Ambassadors within the dioceses. These individuals will play a catalytic role in fundraising to support social development interventions.

These strategic engagements mark a significant milestone in institutional strengthening, decentralization of development planning, and the operationalization of a structured, participatory, and sustainable Diocesan-led development model.

MDS-Kenya will be having similar engagements with Siaya and Kisumu East Dioceses next week.

Yesterday, we joined hands with the Kenya Mennonite Church at our Peace Resource Centres at Obwolo Mennonite Church Kisumu, Migori East Mennonite Church. Olepolos Mennonite churc, Iltriben Mennonite Church, and Enemasi Mennonite Church to mark this day with purpose. Our celebration wasn’t just a day of awareness we made it alive by preaching peace during the church service, with action through tree planting, planting hope and peace in our communities.

This year’s UN theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World” reminds each of us that peace doesn’t wait. Each small act like planting a tree, listening, caring, forgiving contributes to that peaceful world we all dream of.

Let these trees grow as symbols of our shared commitment to love, harmony, reconciliation, and justice. May they root deep, live long, and inspire many more acts of peace.

Last week, we were privileged to walk alongside the resilient people of Turkana County during a two-day food distribution exercise.
On Thursday in Kanamkemer Lodwar, and on Friday in Kakuma, we reached 1,300 individuals with essential food items—maize, beans, salt, and cooking oil—to help alleviate the burden of hunger brought about by prolonged drought.
This effort was made possible through strong partnerships and collective commitment. We were honored to have:
Turkana County Deputy County Secretary, Mr. Joseph Nyang’a
The County Commissioner’s office, together with local and national administrative units
Mennonite Central Committee - MCC (MCC) Representative for Kenya and Tanzania, Mr. Paul Mosley
This marked the end of the second phase of distribution, but not the end of our journey with the Turkana community. Through continued partnerships, we strive to create sustainable solutions that extend beyond relief—bringing hope, resilience, and lasting impact.
Together, we can make a difference.

"Step by step, the Lord is guiding us in shaping the peace and social development wing of the Kenya Mennonite Church. On 22nd August, all KMC Bishops together with the MDS board of directors and MDS resource mobilization team came together in unity and approved a development framework for the KMC Diocesan Development Agencies. The framework will strengthen peace and social transformation efforts at the Diocese level. A new guide was also adopted to establish the Diocesan Project Management Committee (DPMC), which will provide leadership, coordination, and oversight for all peace and social transformation initiatives at the Diocese level. We give glory to God for this milestone and trust Him for the journey ahead".

MDS Kenya had the opportunity to stand with the community in Kanamkemer , Turkana County where we distributed food to the needy community members.

Thanks to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), families received vital food items including maize, beans, cooking oil, and salt — offering comfort and nourishment during these challenging times.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this effort possible. Your generosity is helping us reach communities with practical help and a message of care.
