Malaria prevention doesn’t begin at the facility, but with what happens in the community.

Our field officers under the Community Case Management of Malaria Project conducted a biannual link facility mentorship with Community Health Promoters (CHPs) from Bomwanda Community Health Unit (CHU), linked to Kiaruta Health Centre in Bonchari Sub-County, Kisii County.

The CHU has a functional community health committee, malaria activities integrated into its work plans, growing CHP recognition, improved social behaviour change and reduced unskilled deliveries. The engagement also identified gaps in commodities and referrals.

Sustaining these gains requires continuous mentorship, reliable commodities and functional referral pathways.

A circular economy becomes real when national ambition can be translated into local action.

We're participating in the County Public Participation and Awareness Session on Kenya’s National Circular Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (CESIP) for the Lake Basin Region.

The forum is bringing together county governments, private-sector actors, civil society, youth and women groups and other stakeholders to examine proposed interventions and contribute regional perspectives on how circular economy approaches can work in practice.

Discussions are focusing on sectors including electronics, textiles and construction, with attention to e-waste recovery, textile recycling, sustainable construction, resource recovery and green procurement.

The transition to a circular economy will depend not only on national policy, but on whether local actors have the voice, systems and opportunities to turn that policy into solutions that reduce waste, create value and strengthen sustainable livelihoods.

When community health systems work, their impact can be seen in the choices people make.

In Lugari, Kakamega County, our field officers under the Community Case Management of Malaria Project conducted a biannual link facility mentorship and support supervision with Majengo A and B Community Health Units (CHUs), linked to Majengo Dispensary.

The engagement focused on strengthening malaria case detection, documentation, household health talks, referrals and data management. Importantly, the team noted that home deliveries have reduced following referrals made by Community Health Promoters, while the CHUs continue to implement malaria activities through their operational work plans.

Community-based care works best when CHPs are supported with the tools, referral systems and linkages needed to turn household-level engagement into timely care.

What is my role in promoting mental wellness?

That was one of the questions left Adhiambo with. And perhaps the answer begins with recognizing that creating a mentally healthier world isn’t someone else’s job, but something each of us can contribute to.

As she put it, “It takes me to save the world.”

Maybe change begins with asking what role we can each play.
