For many families, a donkey is not just an animal, it is a source of livelihood in the home. Donkeys help provide water to drink, food to eat, and income to support school fees and daily needs.
Illegal donkey skin trade continues to pose a major threat to donkeys. The growing demand for donkey skins has left many families living in fear of losing their donkeys overnight, thus affecting livelihoods especially for rural communities that depend on donkeys.
To help keep our donkeys safe, especially in the border areas between Kisumu and Kericho counties, STIPA supported by The Brooke East Africa continues to partner with different stakeholders to address issues of Livestock theft and security.
Today we held a meeting with law enforcement officers together with other community stakeholders to strengthen how cases of missing donkeys are reported so that quick action can be taken whenever a donkey is in danger.
This meeting brought together representatives from National Government Administrators, Anti-Stock Theft Unit officers, Livestock Officers, Association of Donkey Owners of Kenya (ADOK) in Kisumu, Youth Representatives, and Peace Actors from Kericho.
By working with law enforcement and community leaders, we are building a safer world where donkeys can live without fear of being stolen.
