Day 2: Experiencing Sustainable Tourism Through Tea at Gatura Green Farm 🍃

Today, participants of the ECOTOURISM KENYA Sustainable Tourism Forum 2026 immersed themselves in the fascinating journey of tea production at Gatura Green Farm, Murang'a.

Our experience went beyond simply tasting tea. We explored the rich history of tea cultivation in Kenya, learning about its discovery, evolution, and growing importance in sustainable agriculture. A special focus was placed on Purple Tea—a unique Kenyan variety known for its high antioxidant content and growing international demand.

🍃 Highlights of the day included:
✅ Learning the history and uniqueness of Purple Tea
✅ Hand-picking fresh purple tea leaves from the farm
✅ Sorting and processing the leaves using traditional hands-on methods
✅ Understanding the different stages of tea production
✅ Participating in a tea tasting session to appreciate the distinct flavors and qualities of various teas
✅ Taking home our own processed tea as a memorable product of the experience

The visit demonstrated how sustainable tourism can create meaningful connections between visitors, local communities, agriculture, and conservation while supporting local livelihoods.

A truly enriching experience that showcased the value of experiential tourism and Kenya's rich agricultural heritage.

🌍 Human Rights Are Not Separate from Sustainable Tourism—They Are Central to It.

Day 1 of the ECOTOURISM KENYA Sustainable Tourism Forum 2026 at Pullman Nairobi Upperhill continues with thought-provoking discussions on Addressing Human Rights in Tourism, facilitated by Bernard Ochieng.

The session challenged tourism stakeholders to look beyond profits and visitor experiences and examine how tourism activities impact people, communities, workers, and the environment. Key discussions explored:

🔹 Strengthening business, conservation, and human rights integration in tourism
🔹 Insights from Kenya's National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (2020–2025)
🔹 Addressing potential negative human rights impacts within the tourism value chain
🔹 Key Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) questions that every tourism enterprise should consider
🔹 Practical HRDD tools available for the tourism sector

One message stood out clearly: Sustainable tourism cannot exist without respect for human rights. Communities, workers, indigenous groups, women, youth, and conservation landscapes must all benefit from tourism development.

At Angaza Vijiji, we believe that responsible tourism should create opportunities, empower local communities, safeguard cultural heritage, and protect natural ecosystems while upholding human dignity and social justice.

As the tourism sector continues to grow, the question is no longer whether human rights matter in tourism—but how effectively we integrate them into every decision, partnership, and business model.

Together, we can build a tourism industry that is not only profitable and environmentally responsible but also equitable and inclusive.

🌍 ECOTOURISM KENYA Sustainable Tourism Forum 2026!

Today at Pullman Nairobi Upperhill, we joined industry leaders, conservation practitioners, tourism stakeholders, and policymakers to explore one of the most critical pillars of sustainable tourism—building a competitive and future-ready workforce.

Key discussions focused on:
✅ Tourism workforce competitiveness
✅ Addressing training and skills gaps
✅ Strengthening collaboration between industry and training institutions
✅ Preparing the next generation of tourism and conservation professionals

As an organization committed to community-based ecotourism, conservation, and sustainable enterprise development, we recognize that investing in people is just as important as investing in destinations. A skilled, innovative, and empowered workforce is essential for creating tourism experiences that benefit communities, protect biodiversity, and drive economic growth.

The conversations today reinforce the need for stronger partnerships between industry, academia, communities, and conservation organizations to shape a tourism sector that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.

We look forward to sharing more insights from the forum as we continue learning, networking, and exploring opportunities for collaboration.

Energy Saving Cookstoves

Traditional cooking methods continue to contribute to deforestation, smoke-related health challenges, and high fuel costs for many households.

Through the promotion of energy-saving cookstoves, communities are adopting cleaner, safer, and more efficient cooking solutions that reduce firewood consumption while protecting forests and improving household wellbeing.

The improved cookstoves initiative is not only supporting environmental conservation but also creating opportunities for local enterprise development and climate action at the community level.

Small changes in how we cook can create a major impact on forests, health, and livelihoods.

Resilience in Action: Kitchen Garden Initiative

The kitchen garden team’s journey hasn’t been smooth—but that’s exactly where the real growth is.

After facing setbacks during their initial setup and early sales, the team didn’t stall. Instead, they reorganized and formed a dedicated group of 10 members to take the lead and drive the initiative forward.

They are also adapting practically—using locally available sacks (gunia) to continue vegetable production while preparing to invest in the recommended materials.

This is what progress looks like:
Not perfect conditions, but persistence.
Not waiting for everything to be ready, but working with what is available.

Step by step, the foundation for a stronger, more sustainable kitchen garden enterprise is being built.
