The Debate Association of Kenya (DAK), in partnership with the Walter Okelo Mentorship Program, proudly hosted the Western Regional Competitions for the Kenya Universities Debate Championship.

This year's theme, "Building Kenya's Future through Youth Dialogue, Accountability, and Economic Justice in Governance," perfectly captures the urgent need for issue-based leadership. The championship focused on building leaders who can amplify societal issues for genuine progress; a mission that sits at the very heart of the Walter Okelo Mentorship Program's vision.

As a mentorship program, we are deeply committed to equipping our young people with the skills necessary for progress and self-advocacy. When we give the youth platforms to articulate the challenges facing our communities, we are actively preparing them to take their rightful seat at the table of governance.

The numbers don’t lie — and they tell a worrying story.

Out of over 22 million registered voters, only 250,391 new voters have been added so far according to the IEBC.
Even more concerning:

67% of the new voters are above 35 years

Only 32% are below 35 years.

Yet, young people are the largest voting bloc heading into 2027, Ma Youth, MKO KADI kweli?

So the question is:
Why aren’t we showing up?

Real change will not come from numbers we have — but from numbers we activate.
The future belongs to the youth, but only if the youth register, show up, and vote.
