18th May 2026 marked an important milestone given that it's mental health awareness month, we officially launched the Children’s Mental Health and Resilience Program which is a safe and supportive initiative dedicated to promoting the emotional wellbeing, resilience, and mental health of children, adolescents and the youth in our communities.

The program seeks to create safe spaces where children and the youth can heal, learn, express themselves, and build confidence through psychosocial support, mentorship, life skills, awareness sessions, play-based learning, and community engagement.

We believe that every child deserves to grow in an environment where they feel heard, valued, protected, and supported. As we begin this journey, we look forward to working closely with schools, caregivers, community leaders, health workers, and partners to strengthen child mental health awareness and resilience for a brighter future. Together, we can raise resilient children and healthier communities."

Last week, we conducted a community dialogue forum at Osindo Beach focused on malaria prevention and treatment, bringing together community members to discuss key challenges affecting timely access to care.

Among the concerns raised were the long distance to health facilities, delays in seeking treatment, inadequate access to Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), frequent medicine stock-outs, and strong religious beliefs that sometimes lead caregivers to seek prayers instead of medical care.

Community members emphasized the need for regular outreach programs, consistent medicine availability, and continued sensitization on malaria prevention, treatment, and timely health-seeking behavior to strengthen malaria control efforts and improve health outcomes in the area.

Meaningful community conversations like these are key to promoting awareness, encouraging timely care-seeking, and strengthening efforts to prevent and manage malaria.

Last week marked an important step in advancing the sustainability of the Koteyo/Kiswaro Water Project. As Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, we engaged with key government stakeholders to align on practical, long-term solutions that ensure reliable water access for the communities we serve.

Our discussions at the County level highlighted the growing need for collaborative, future-focused approaches to water management. At WRA Kisumu, we further explored pathways to streamline water permit processes and strengthen compliance, laying the groundwork for more efficient implementation.

These engagements reaffirm our commitment to working hand in hand with partners to build systems that functional today and sustainable for the future.

At the core of it all is a shared goal; reliable water, stronger systems and thriving communities.

A Journey from Uncertainty to Impact: Josephine’s Climate Change Adaptation Journey

In Bondo, Siaya County, Josephine Anyango Otieno is redefining farming as a pathway to growth, resilience, and community transformation.

Once held back by unpredictable seasons, limited market access, and a lack of structure, Josephine’s journey began to shift when she joined the SME Loop program. Through practical training, she gained the skills to plan, adapt to climate realities, and manage her farm as a business.

“I didn’t know how to keep time or reach the market… now I stay focused and plan with purpose,” she shares.

Today, her farm thrives with African leafy vegetables, supported by climate-smart practices and a more strategic approach. Her impact extends beyond her own farm. Josephine has created a demonstration farm, a space where young people and women come together to learn, share knowledge, and grow.

“We learn together… and we grow from there.”

By mentoring others, providing seeds, and guiding new farmers, she is helping women move from dependence to independence, earning income, feeding their families, and building confidence. "There is opportunity in the soil when knowledge meets determination."

Josephine was a participant in the second cohort of the SME Loop training program in Siaya supported by Kenya under the Business Solutions Project implemented by Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust.

Wilson's work is driven by a commitment to empowering communities by ensuring our systems run efficiently, securely, and reliably.

By managing network systems, servers, supporting ICT infrastructure and advising on technology investments, Wilson plays a critical role in keeping operations seamless. His work behind the scenes ensures that teams on the ground can deliver impactful programs without disruption.

Beyond the technical, he champions a culture of continuous learning and innovation, supporting staff to build their capacity while upholding the organization’s core values.

Because sometimes, the greatest impact is built quietly—through systems that work, people that grow, and a mission that moves forward every day.

“I take pride in being your Rafiki.”

Today marked the celebration of a milestone as we officially broke ground to the construction of the new Koteyo Water Pump Station in Rarieda today. The event was highlighted by the handover of the blue prints of the station to the construction team and management.

This initiative comes after the lake water level kept breaking its limits several times and gradually rising over the past few years, interfering with operations at the initial water pump station by flooding it, rendering access and maintenance a hustle and at times impossible.

This resulted in delayed or missed maintenance routines incase of clogs or pipe bursts or a glitch at the pumping station which meant poor or no water supply to some parts of of the Koteyo community in worst case scenarios.

With the move to relocate the pump, we are looking forward to a flawless water supply system and service to the communities the water line serves in its wake. We would like to thank our community for walking along with us and our partners Energies for the continued support for the initiative. The construction is estimated to end in 6-8 weeks from today.

Lucy and her family could not hide their joy after their dream is realized. Her family had been staying in an unsuitable house for a long time, and they finally got to celebrated Easter in a new house.

Special thanks to our partners, Rotary Club Darmstadt-Bergstraße D1860, for supporting the initiative and to the visiting Solferino team for the manual construction together with the Rafiki wa Manedeleo Trust staff members.

May God bless you all.
