Saving Kenya’s Dying and Rising Lakes in Kenya 🇰🇪🌊
Our lakes are not just bodies of water; they are the lifelines of our ecosystems, local economies, and millions of livelihoods. Today, they are crying out for urgent attention.
While we mark , we cannot ignore the environmental crises unfolding right before our eyes:

Rising Rift Valley Waters:
Lakes Nakuru, Naivasha, and Baringo continue to experience severe water surges. Entire families have been displaced, infrastructure submerged, and livelihoods wiped out due to severe catchment degradation and climate shocks.

The Choking of Lake Victoria:
In Kisumu and across the lake basin, residents are dealing with a severe, suffocating stench. Untreated industrial effluent, raw municipal sewage, water hyacinth, and toxic algal blooms are rapidly degrading Africa's largest lake.

We are calling on key regulatory and research bodies—including the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI), the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, and local county leadership—to step up:

* Strictly enforce waste discharge regulations for factories and municipalities along feeder rivers.

* Provide transparent research updates to the public regarding rising water levels and toxic blooms.

* Execute immediate catchment and buffer zone restoration to curb dangerous runoffs.

* Support displaced communities affected by rising lake levels.

We cannot celebrate our lakes with statements while they choke, smell, and submerge our communities.

A community displaced without adequate protection or compensation.
A citizen unable to access information about decisions affecting their community.
A woman facing discrimination despite constitutional guarantees of equality.

Winam Grassroots has always been among the frontline humaniterian service providers at the grassroots level. As local actors having the power to shape priorities, influence decisions on resources allocation and programming hence determining how risks are managed. Working on Care for grassroots communities locally led action should be a norm and not an exception.

Despite the shrinking funding pool that has affected most of the Humaniterian work globally that has led to insecurities, complex crisis as part of Humanitarians we continue to show up and do our best.

Winam team has always dedicated our work towdards our communitys not only to improve but also safeguard grassroots and minority groups.

Care Work is evidently important, especially within the grassroots communities we work in. Winam Grassroots has been actively engaged in by Supporting through continous capacity strengthening of Care Givers.

Giving Care workers a safe space to be Recognised and share different challenges faced in line of duty and to be appreciated.
Through our community health Practioners, Volunteers and Staff we've been able to appreciate care work delivering culturally appropriate and accessible care within the grassroots communities we work with and beyond.

When we support care providers, the impact doesn't stop with one person it lifts entire families and communities!

According to our latest surveyed frontline initiatives:
40% reach up to 200 indirect household beneficiaries per program.
Over 33% reach between 200 and 1,000+ indirect beneficiaries!

Through grassroots action, we are directly advancing SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being) across our regional households.

Together, local care creates regional change.
