From Learning to Action: A Remarkable Week of Sustainable Goals Through Sport (SGS) in Kisumu, Kenya! 🇰🇪⚽
From 6–11 July 2026, Kisumu became a vibrant hub of international collaboration as 36 experts, youth workers, coaches, educators, and sustainability champions from Kenya 🇰🇪, Senegal 🇸🇳, and Europe 🇪🇺 came together for the Training of Coaches (ToC) under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in the Field of Sport project "Sustainable Goals Through Sport (SGS)" (Grant Agreement No. 101246981).
Hosted by Resource Hub for Development (RHD), Kenya, coordinated by the Budapest Association for International Sports (BAIS), Hungary, and funded by the European Union, the training strengthened the capacity of participants to use sport as a powerful tool for sustainability, social inclusion, and youth empowerment.
Highlights from an Inspiring Week:
Day 1 laid the foundation with team-building activities, introductions, project orientation, and discussions on how sport can drive sustainability, inclusion, teamwork, and youth engagement. Participants also enjoyed an inspiring outdoor sports-based inclusion activity with students at St. Teresa Kibuye Senior School, demonstrating the transformative power of sport in action.
Day 2 focused on Education Through Sport (ETS) and Non-Formal Education. Participants designed innovative sport-based learning activities promoting sustainability before putting theory into practice through SGS sports sessions with students at St. Mark Nyabera Junior School.
Day 3 explored social inclusion, gender equality, and human rights through sport. Participants also visited KiYA – Kisumu Young Agripreneurs, where they learned how youth-led initiatives are advancing sustainability, entrepreneurship, and community development in Kisumu.
Day 4 showcased the project's innovative resources, including the SGS Research Outcomes, Digital Knowledge Hub, and online learning modules developed by Centre for Sustainable Solutions Ireland (CSSI). Participants tested the e-learning platform both in the training venue and at the Kisumu Urban Apostolate Programme (KUAP) Vocational Centre, providing valuable feedback for future implementation.
Day 5 shifted the focus from learning to action. Through workshops on project planning, grant writing, and funding opportunities, participants developed practical local initiatives that will be implemented in their respective countries. The day concluded with a breathtaking visit to Lake Victoria at sunset before participants celebrated Kenya's rich culture during the Kenyan Intercultural Night.
Day 6 marked the successful conclusion of the training as participants presented their local action plans, reflected on their learning journey, received certificates, and reaffirmed their commitment to using sport as a catalyst for sustainable development, inclusion, and youth empowerment across Europe and Africa.
Throughout the week, daily reflection sessions, intercultural evenings, collaborative workshops, community visits, and practical sports activities created lasting friendships, strengthened international partnerships, and inspired innovative ideas that will continue creating positive impact far beyond Kisumu.
