📢 OUT OF THE SHADOWS: Advocating for a Torture-Free Future 🕊️

Together with our strategic partners National Gay and Le***an Human Rights Commission, UNDP Kenya, Kenya Human Rights Commission, Wklff.lbqt, Talanta Africa, and Jinsiangu Kenya.

We are proud to announce the completion and submission of the National Shadow Report to the UN Committee Against Torture (UNCAT)! 📑🌍

While official state reports provide one perspective, Kenya SOGIESC Shadow Report brings the voices of survivors, human rights defenders, and civil society to the forefront. It offers a critical, evidence-based look at the reality of torture and ill-treatment in Kenya.

⏩️⏩️⏩️ Why This Matters:

The Convention Against Torture isn't just a document—it’s a promise of safety and dignity for every citizen. Kenya SOGIESC report highlights:

🔍 Gaps in Accountability: Identifying where the current legal framework falls short.

🛡️ Protection for the Vulnerable: Shining a light on custodial conditions and the rights of detainees.

⚖️ Recommendations for Change: Providing the UN Committee with actionable steps to hold authorities accountable.

A huge thank you to all the partner organizations, legal experts, and courageous individuals who contributed data and testimony to make this report possible. 🤝💪

Shaping a Governance that Leaves No One Behind. 🏳️‍⚧️🌍

Together with our strategic partners Jinsiangu Kenya, UNDP Kenya, and KELIN We just concluded a high-level National Strategic Indaba to develop Kenya's SOGIESC Shadow Report for the 87th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR).

By reviewing Kenya’s 14th Periodic Report, we are doing the vital work of democratic oversight. Good governance requires that the lived realities of SOGIES persons in all their divesities are reflected in the national record.

We are here to bridge the gap between policy on paper and justice on the ground.

Accountability is the heartbeat of our movement! ✊🏾

– Visibility is Our Self-Sovereignty
“In a world that often demands our silence, our visibility is a radical act of self-sovereignty.” 🇰🇪🏳️‍⚧️

Today, the National Transgender Advocacy Network of Kenya (NTAN) joins the global community to mark Transgender Day of Visibility 2026. Under the theme , we celebrate the vibrant and resilient lives of Transgender Kenyans who are no longer waiting for permission to exist in the light.

Why Our Visibility Matters Right Now:

⏭️⏭️⏭️Political Agency: In a climate of rising anti-gender rhetoric, visibility is our most potent form of advocacy. We refuse to be discussed in absentia.

⏭️⏭️⏭️The Right to Health: We demand that Gender-Affirming Care (GAC) be recognized as a fundamental component of the right to health, rooted in autonomy rather than pathologization.

⏭️⏭️⏭️A Historic Turning Point: After 14 years of movement-building, Kenya is closer than ever to the fulfillment of Legal Gender Recognition (LGR).

Trans Kenyans are :

⏭️⏭️⏭️The "Hustlers" of the Republic: We are the entrepreneurs and laborers driving the economic heartbeat of this nation.

⏭️⏭️⏭️The Fabric of Community: Our lives are a fundamental Kenyan reality rooted in our ancestral soil and the value of Undugu (kinship).

⏭️⏭️⏭️The Right to Safety: Like every citizen, we dream of the simple right to walk to the Duka or board a matatu without fear.

Our joy, our struggles, and our resilience are the threads that bind this nation together. We are your neighbors, your colleagues, and your kin.

🏳️‍⚧️ TDOV 2026: The Personal is Political.

Our autonomy is non-negotiable and our existence is the blueprint; our liberation is the mandate.
Visibility is more than a moment—it is a sustained act of resistance.

, WE refuse to be defined by narrow margins or silenced by outdated structures. As a Feminist movement , WE know that our right to lead, to dream, and to simply be is the foundation of a more just world.

To our community: We are the architects of our own freedom. Today, we don’t just ask for space; we command it.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Practical Advocacy Tools to navigate national and county policy reform.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Legal Literacy to dismantle barriers to quality healthcare.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Concrete Action Plans for sustained, community-led engagement.

🏥 Health Integration Summit | Mombasa 2026

"Health Without Barriers for a Holistic HIV Response."

We are gathering in Mombasa to transition Kenya’s health landscape—integrating HIV, TB, and Malaria services into Primary Health Care (PHC) and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale officially launched 20 landmark documents under the Integrated Guidelines for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B. These aren't just papers—they are the blueprints for how we provide care in our Primary Healthcare Networks (PCNs). By moving away from "siloed" programs and into integrated clinics, we make the patient journey smoother and more dignified.

Follow us for live updates, keynote highlights, and the roadmap to a self-reliant health system. 🇰🇪✨

📢 Transforming Advocacy into Action: Securing the Right to Health in Kenya

We are taking a giant leap forward! TAK is proud to continue its strategic engagement with the Right to Health (RTH) Thematic Group as we collaboratively spearhead the development of a robust National Advocacy and Communications Strategy.

🏛️ Building on the UPR Success

This strategy isn’t starting from scratch—it is firmly rooted in the outcomes of Kenya's recent 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Following the review in Geneva, where 122 countries provided recommendations to Kenya, we are now turning those global commitments into local realities.

🎯 Our Strategic Focus:

⏭️⏭️⏭️UHC & Health Financing: Lobbying for the 15% Abuja Declaration budget commitment and transparent Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) implementation.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Inclusive Healthcare: Ensuring that Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR), HIV prevention, and Mental Health remain at the forefront of the national agenda.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Accountability: Creating a unified voice for CSOs to track the implementation of the 339 human rights recommendations received by Kenya.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Geopolitical Positioning: Navigating the "Health as Statecraft" era to ensure Kenya remains a leader in regional health diplomacy.

Why This Strategy Matters:

Advocacy is most powerful when it is coordinated. By aligning our communications with international human rights standards, we are ensuring that every Kenyan—regardless of their background—can enjoy the highest attainable standard of health as guaranteed by Article 43 of our Constitution.

🌍 Strategic Engagement: Strengthening Health Diplomacy in Kenya

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Capacity Building Training for Kenyan CSOs! In a rapidly evolving global landscape, understanding the intersection of health and policy is more critical than ever.

As part of our strategic engagement with the Right_ to_Health (RTH) Thematic Group, and in close collaboration with our partners KELIN, Wklff.lbqt, and The East African Centre for Human Rights - EACHRights, we delved deep into the future of healthcare governance.

🔑 Key Highlights:

⏭️⏭️⏭️Health Cooperative Framework: Navigating the essential structures that guide Kenya’s health sector.

⏭️⏭️⏭️G-2-G Mechanisms: Exploring Government-to-Government pathways for CSOs and County Governments to ensure sustainable impact.

⏭️⏭️⏭️Health Diplomacy as Statecraft: Analyzing how health has shifted into a primary tool of international relations and geopolitical strategy.

Why This Matters:

In a changing geopolitical context, health is no longer just a service—it’s statecraft. By equipping Civil Society Organizations with these insights, we are ensuring that the right to health remains a priority at both the county and national levels.

Together, we are building a more resilient, informed, and collaborative health ecosystem for all Kenyans. 🇰🇪 🩺

Today, we stand in solidarity on International Human Rights Day! 🌍 While the world collectively remembers and advocates for fundamental human rights, we specifically want to shine a light on the transgender, gender diverse, and inters*x (TGDI) persons in Kenya.

Every individual, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves respect, equality, and freedom from discrimination. Sadly, TGDI persons in Kenya still face significant challenges and human rights violations.

Let's use this day to reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of ALL people. We call for greater understanding, acceptance, and legal protection for TGDI individuals in Kenya. Let's continue to work towards a society where every human right is upheld for everyone.
