We are just getting back to our feet after two days of intense collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving at the hosted at LAKEHUB.

9 teams showcased how Copernicus Earth Observation data and the Kijani Box can be harnessed to build climate-smart solutions for the Lake Victoria Basin. Every team demonstrated the power of innovation when technology is applied to real community challenges.

The judges had the difficult task of evaluating solutions based on innovation, technical ex*****on, business viability, and potential for real-world impact.

Eventually, three terms stood out for their ingenuity, practicality, and potential to create lasting impact. Congratulations to:

🥇 Feed Sync – 1st Place
🥈 Nemo – 2nd Place
🥉 Jonam – 3rd Place

The other six teams also went above and beyond to present ideas and prototypes that that genuinely addressed the challenges faced by communities in the Lake Victoria Basin. The hours of learning, teamwork, and determination were not a waste.

We look forward to seeing these ideas refined, tested, and developed into solutions that strengthen livelihoods, build climate resilience, and demonstrate the transformative potential of SpaceTech and IoT across Africa.

Happy Friday!

We have gathered young innovators, developers, designers, and entrepreneurs at KijaniSpace Talent Programme Hackathon to build tech-driven, real-world solutions for the Lake Victoria basin and beyond.

Using Copernicus Earth Observation data + IoT integration, participants will rapidly prototype and pitch climate-smart concepts targeting agriculture, aquaculture, health, and education under the theme “Hack for Aquaculture & Crops using Earth Observation & IoT Technologies”.

What do we expect to see across today and tomorrow?

-Rapid prototyping & design thinking
-Hands-on Space-IoT technology
-Entrepreneurial pitch practice
-Scouting top talent & seed concepts for future incubation

We are incredibly proud to see our Co-Executive Director, Caleb Nyoiro representing LAKEHUB and Zone01Kisumu and serving as Master of Ceremonies at the 2026 Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Forum on U.S. – Africa Commercial Partnerships.

The discussions held over the past three days reaffirmed something we believe deeply here at LakeHub - Africa has the talent, ideas, innovation, and leadership to shape the future of global commerce.

It is especially encouraging to see Zone01 Kisumu recognized as a source of top African tech talent. Our mission has always been to develop tech talent who can compete and thrive anywhere in the world, and seeing our apprentices already contributing to U.S. companies is a testament to what is possible when opportunity meets potential.

Congratulations to our Co-ED for representing Kisumu and Kenya on such an important platform, and to the Mandela Washington Fellowship and IREX community for continuing to build meaningful bridges between Africa and the United States.

We are proud to share that LAKEHUB, in partnership with United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, has successfully completed Fieldwork 3 of the Chichwa Digital Agriculture Platform across Tana River, Garissa, Turkana, and West Pokot counties.

Across two weeks, our team, led by Zone01 Kisumu's Alpha Omondi;
✅ Trained county government and NDMA focal persons.
🤝 Onboarded cooperatives and more than 30 farmers.
📱 Officially handed over platform administration to local stakeholders through a train-the-trainer approach.

This significant milestone confirms that Chichwa is ready for wider deployment while placing ownership in the hands of the communities it is designed to serve.

The fieldwork also provided valuable insights that will guide the next round of platform improvements, ensuring an even better experience for farmers and partners.

Together with UNDP, we're are proud of our efforts in helping expand digital market access for smallholder farmers across Kenya's ASAL regions, building a future where technology empowers communities, strengthens resilience, and creates more inclusive agricultural markets.

A week ago today, Zone01 Kisumu apprentices, past and present, proudly stepped into leadership roles as Head Judges and Volunteers at The Tech Challenge, thanks to our partnership with The Tech Interactive.

The Tech Challenge experience always gives our apprentices a chance to strengthen their leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while mentoring and encouraging the next generation of innovators. It's no wonder they love it!

This partnership reflects a shared commitment. Zone01 Kisumu and The Tech Interactive exist to inspire young people, and especially girls to explore , build confidence, and see themselves as future creators of technology.
