ANIGA Women CBO: Changing Lives from the Soil Up
Tucked in the heart of West Seme in Kisumu County, ANIGA Women CBO has been a quiet but powerful force of change since 2010. What started as a small group of determined women has grown into a vibrant community initiative transforming lives through sustainable agriculture, nutrition, climate action and girl empowerment.
With a strong belief in the power of women and youth, ANIGA is not just farming—it is fighting malnutrition, growing incomes, mentoring girls and protecting the environment one project at a time.
Through the cultivation of Orange and Purple Fleshed Sweet Potatoes (OFSP), over 300 women farmers have received clean vines, agronomic training and new hope. These nutrient-rich crops are now the foundation of locally made porridge mixes and crisps, helping tackle hunger and malnutrition among children and the elderly.
Beyond potatoes, ANIGA is growing mushrooms as a source of nutrition and income, and championing the use of eco-cook stoves—locally made, energy-saving and climate-friendly.
And because true empowerment starts with knowledge, the CBO has also helped set up a community library at Okuto Primary School and launched a mentorship program for girls—ensuring no one is left behind.
ANIGA’s work is deeply rooted in Kenya’s broader goal of transforming agriculture into a driver of economic growth, food security and nutrition. By focusing on climate-smart crops and community-driven innovation, they are proving that real change begins at the grassroots.
“We believe that when rural women rise, entire communities rise with them.”
