Today, we engaged the Kisumu County Revenue Board and Finance Department to validate the Own-Source Revenue (OSR) Capacity Study Report, which assessed the county’s revenue potential in market fees, business permits, and bus park collections.
Findings reveal that Kisumu County has an estimated OSR potential of Ksh 2.3 billion annually, with trade licensing alone projected to generate Ksh 1.083 billion. However, revenue collection has consistently fallen short—over the FY 2013/14 – FY 2022/23 period, only 45% (Ksh 10.6B) of the targeted Ksh 23.5B was collected.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), and Matatu Business Operators Kisumu, among others. Their input is critical in identifying solutions to improve revenue generation and enhance economic growth in Kisumu County.
Bridging this revenue gap is essential for strengthening service delivery, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and promoting economic development. Collaborative efforts and accountability will be key in unlocking Kisumu’s full revenue potential.
