Home Visits Update — Nyalenda Shelter of Hope

This past week, our team walked door to door through some of Nyalenda's most vulnerable neighborhoods, sitting down with families to identify children in urgent need of support — as part of our growing partnership with St. Joseph.

We're grateful to share that 6 young girls were identified and enrolled during these visits — each one now a step closer to school, stability, and a future full of hope.

Next up: our team heads back to the streets to complete assessments for the children still waiting to be reached. Every visit, every conversation, brings another child closer to safety.

None of this is possible without partners and friends who believe that no child should be left behind. Thank you for walking this journey with us. 🙏

Exploring a New Partnership for Our Street Children

At Nyalenda Shelter of Hope CBO, we're always looking for ways to give street children in Kisumu a real path forward — not just a meal for the day, but a safe place to grow, learn and be mentored.

Following our recent Street Feeding & Partnership Day with Friends Pioneer, we sat down with the team at St. Philip Neri Home, a rescue centre here in Nyalenda, to talk about how we might work together. The conversation centered on two challenges we've been grappling with: finding safe shelter for children who are ready for school but have nowhere secure to stay, and creating a structured space where children can be mentored before joining school.

These are still early, exploratory discussions — nothing has been finalized — but we're encouraged by the shared commitment to rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration that St. Philip Neri Home brings to the table. We'll keep engaging with them, alongside Friends Pioneer, to see how this potential collaboration could take shape.

TODAY WAS ABOUT MORE THAN FOOD. ❤️

Today at Nyalenda Shelter of Hope, we welcomed street children and vulnerable families for a day of food, conversation, dignity and hope.

About 100 people were reached.

But behind every face was a story — children facing broken families, poverty, uncertainty and the daily struggle of surviving on the streets.

We listened. We assessed. We talked. And most importantly, we refused to let their stories end on the streets.

The reality is painful: some children have nowhere safe to go when school closes. Some families cannot even afford basic necessities. Some children have been promised help before and are still waiting.

That is why today matters.

We may not have everything, but we can do something. And we must.

Thank you to everyone who stood with us today. The journey is only beginning.

🍽️ STREET FEEDING ACTIVITY – 10TH AUGUST 2026 💙

Hunger should never stop a child from dreaming.

On 10th August 2026, Nyalenda Shelter of Hope, in collaboration with Friends Pioneer, will host a Street Feeding Activity at the Nyalenda Shelter of Hope Grounds from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

This outreach is more than just sharing a meal. It is an opportunity to show love, restore hope, and connect with vulnerable street children in our community. As we provide hot, nutritious meals, we will also identify children who are willing to leave street life and return to school so we can begin walking with them toward a brighter future.

Our main focus: 🍛 Provide nutritious meals to street children.
🎒 Identify children who want to go back to school.
❤️ Reach out with love, encouragement, and restore hope and dignity.

🏠 **From Commitment to Action!** 🎓

Today we followed up with our partners at Friends Pioneers (St. Joseph High School) to turn plans into real progress for the street children and youth of Kisumu.

✅ Growing our goal from 17 to over 20 street girls and boys returning to school
✅ Boarding arrangements being explored for homeless boys

✅ Pre-enrolment mentorship starting to help our children adjust to school life

We're not just enrolling children in school — we're giving them a reason to believe in a future off the streets, and a family to return to when they're ready. 💛

🌟 **A Visit Full of Hope and New Beginnings!** 🌟

Today, Shelter of Hope had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Lucky from St. Joseph School ( Pioneer) for a special visit! 🙌

As partners in the mission to uplift our community, we had a fruitful discussion around:

✅ Enrollment of street kids into school — giving them a chance to learn, grow, and dream big
✅ Adult learning programs for our street girls — empowering them with skills and knowledge for a brighter future
✅ Other exciting partnerships and collaborations to expand our impact together

We're also excited to announce that Shelter of Hope and St. Joseph School will be organizing a joint street activity to reach out to and connect with street kids and girls in our community. This will help us identify and reach those who need our support the most. 💛

Today we had the privilege of hosting Keline Osano from Nyikal Foundation at Shelter of Hope CBO! 🎉

We spent the day walking through our sack garden projects and discussing meaningful areas of partnership. A key focus of our conversation was supporting our reformed street girls, with plans to extend this support to young girls in our community as well.

This kind of collaboration means so much to us — together we can create more opportunities, more safety, and more hope for the girls we serve. We're grateful for organizations like Nyikal Foundation who share our vision that every child has a right to a better future. 💚

The Story Behind the Spin Cycle Washing Machine Bicycle

The Spin Cycle Washing Machine Bicycle was the brainchild of Wilistone Juma, Founder and Executive Director of Nyalenda Shelter of Hope CBO in Kisumu, Kenya. Having spent part of his childhood living on the streets after losing his parents at a young age, Wilistone understands the hardships faced by street-connected children, unemployed youth, and vulnerable families. His personal journey inspired him to create a practical solution that would restore dignity, create employment, and serve the community.

Recognizing that many households struggle with the cost of laundry services and electricity, Wilistone envisioned a bicycle-powered washing machine that could provide affordable, environmentally friendly laundry services while creating income-generating opportunities. By simply pedaling the bicycle, the washing machine operates without electricity, making it an innovative and sustainable solution for underserved communities.

Through Nyalenda Shelter of Hope CBO, the project empowers former street children, reformed youth, single mothers, and vulnerable families to earn a living through a mobile door-to-door laundry service. Instead of depending on donations, beneficiaries can operate the bicycle-powered washing machines as a social enterprise, building financial independence while improving hygiene within the community.

Empowering Women, Restoring Hope

Today, Nyalenda Shelter of Hope CBO was honored to host a special meeting with women who are rebuilding their lives after leaving the streets. It was a meaningful day filled with mentorship, encouragement, and practical life lessons aimed at empowering them for a brighter future.

During the session, we discussed our vision of supporting more girls and young women by helping them return to school, access vocational training, and start small businesses that can provide sustainable incomes. We also strengthened our commitment to the Reformed Street Women Kisumu group, which serves as a platform for mutual support, savings, mentorship, and economic empowerment.

As part of our outreach, we distributed sanitary towels to the women and girls and provided diapers for mothers with young children, helping meet some of their immediate needs while promoting health and dignity.

At Nyalenda Shelter of Hope, we believe that every woman deserves a second chance. Through education, mentorship, livelihood opportunities, and compassionate support, we are committed to helping women and girls rebuild their lives, become self-reliant, and create a better future for themselves and their children.
