Hope to the Vulnerable Communities- HOVUC

Hope to the Vulnerable Communities- HOVUC We envision a just and empowered society where women and youth lead in shaping equitable communities We embrace a just and equitable world for all.

Hope to the Vulnerable Communities (HOVUC) Organization was formed in August 2017 in response to the post-election violence that adversely affected adolescent girls and women in Kisumu County, Kenya. The violence left many adolescent girls and women vulnerable to various forms of abuse, including s*xual violence, and also limited their access to s*xual and reproductive health (SRH) services. HOVUC

was formed to address these issues and promote the empowerment and well-being of adolescent girls and women in the community. HOVUC was officially registered as a CBO in September 2019, and since then, we have been working tirelessly to improve the wellness of adolescent girls and women in our community. We believe in a world where mental health is prioritized, SRHR are respected, capacity building is promoted, advocacy is effective, governance is transparent and accountable, education is accessible, and research is evidence-based. HOVUC is committed to promoting the empowerment and well-being of adolescent girls and women in our community. We believe that every adolescent girl and woman has the right to access the resources and support she needs to reach her full potential and live a healthy, fulfilling life. VISION

This morning, we visited the Manyatta Women Group to follow up on the progress of the chicks distributed to them a few weeks ago, while also empowering the members with entrepreneurial and financial management skills.

During the training session, we equipped the women with practical knowledge on bookkeeping, budgeting, visibility and marketing of their poultry, pricing, and profit-making strategies. Our goal is to ensure that poultry farming becomes not just a livelihood activity, but a profitable and sustainable source of income for the women and their families.

After the session, we visited one of the members’ farms and were excited by the progress we witnessed. The chicks looked healthy, strong, and well-grown — a true reflection of the commitment of the group members and the impact of the continuous poultry management trainings they have received.

At HOVUC, together with Women First International Fund , we remain committed to empowering women economically by equipping them with both practical farming skills and entrepreneurial knowledge that strengthens their financial independence and resilience.

Over the past three days, HOVUC participated in the Inclusive Entrepreneurship Curriculum Validation and Co-Creation Workshop held in Nakuru under the IYBA SEED Program implemented by SlovakAid through Impact Gateway Africa. The workshop convened innovation hubs, trainers, facilitators, TVET institutions, development partners, and ecosystem actors to collaboratively validate and strengthen an inclusive entrepreneurship curriculum and Training of Trainers (ToT) Toolkit.

The validation process focused on refining a 15-module curriculum framework designed to support young people and women entrepreneurs at idea and early business stages. Through evidence-based discussions, comparative analysis, reflection sessions, and stakeholder engagement, participants worked to ensure the curriculum is practical, inclusive, market-responsive, and grounded in the lived realities of entrepreneurs across Kisumu, Nakuru, and Uasin Gishu counties.

The workshop also created space for testing and refining facilitation tools, trainee workbooks, and delivery approaches to strengthen knowledge transfer, improve implementation, and support sustainable impact for communities and entrepreneurs.

At HOVUC, we believe meaningful change happens through collaboration, shared learning, and co-creating solutions that respond to emerging community and market needs.

This morning, HOVUC successfully distributed 330 one-month-old chicks to the Manyatta Hope for Empowerment Women’s Group under our Women’s Economic Empowerment program, EmpowerHer,Building Women's Economic Independence in partnership with Women First International Fund

This distribution is a reinvestment by the group, following the success of their previous engagement with us. Encouraged by the positive outcomes, the women have taken a bold step to reinvest and expand their poultry farming activities.

The initiative aims to enhance financial independence among women by supporting poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood. The beneficiaries will nurture the chicks to maturity and generate income through the sale of eggs and chicken.

This milestone follows a rigorous process at our demo farm, where the eggs were incubated, hatched, and the chicks raised, fed, and vaccinated for five weeks.

Today, in partnership with AmplifyChange and the Kisumu County Department of Health, we conducted an outreach session at Kasongo Community Unit in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County, reaching 167 adolescents and young people.

The session focused on delivering accurate and comprehensive SRHR information, including safe s*x, STI prevention and control, family planning, menstrual health, and positive s*xual experiences. Through an open and engaging forum facilitated by trained healthcare workers providing pleasure-inclusive, youth-friendly SRHR services, young people actively participated, asking important questions on menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and safe s*x, clearly demonstrating the need for such safe and informative spaces.

Following the session, young people accessed a range of SRHR services, including condoms (5), STI screening (12), HIV testing (5), pregnancy testing (3), cervical cancer screening (3), and counselling services (17), reflecting increased awareness and confidence in seeking care.

This outreach continues to strengthen access to accurate information and youth-friendly services, empowering young people to make informed decisions about their health and future.

At HOVUC, we are demonstrating that lack of large farming space should never limit your ability to grow your own food.

On our small demo farm, we are practicing smart farming by growing vegetables such as managu, spinach, coriander, and tomatoes—all within a limited space.

This initiative is part of our commitment to climate justice—ensuring that communities, especially women and youth, have access to practical, sustainable solutions for food production and resilience.

You too can start right where you are. That small garden behind your kitchen can make a difference.

We invite you to:
📍 Visit our demo farm and learn firsthand
📩 Reach out to us for inquiries and guidance

Climate justice starts with you—and it starts small.

Today, in partnership with AmplifyChangeChange and the Kisumu County Department of Health, we conducted a Pleasure-Inclusive Youth Clinic Day at Ramula Health Facility in Ombeyi-Miwani Ward, reaching 125 adolescents and young people aged 10–25.

The session focused on delivering comprehensive SRHR information on menstrual health and hygiene management, family planning methods and side effects, STI prevention and management, consent, confidentiality, bodily autonomy, and positive s*xual experiences, complemented by practical demonstrations on the correct use of SRHR commodities, including condoms, lubricants, and contraceptives.

Services were being offered from the recently launched youth-friendly SRHR clinic within the facility and delivered by trained healthcare workers providing pleasure-inclusive, youth-friendly services. A total of 33 young people accessed services, including family planning methods such as condoms (12), Sayana (6), NXT (5), Microgynon (3), and Jadelle (7), alongside cervical cancer screening (7) and pregnancy testing (3).

The engagement strengthened youth ownership, with participants committing to act as community champions. As one youth shared, the initiative is timely and essential in addressing the high rates of teenage pregnancies within the community.

Last Friday, 10th April 2026, we facilitated an Intergenerational Community Dialogue at Kasongo Community Unit, bringing together 30 participants, including the Chief, teachers, cultural and religious leaders, parents, youth, and healthcare workers, to address pressing s*xual and reproductive health challenges affecting young people.

The discussion underscored the reality that adolescents and young people are maturing faster than previous generations, creating an urgent need for timely, accurate, and pleasure-inclusive SRHR information to support informed decision-making. Participants emphasized the importance of reviving traditional community systems of educating young people, while strengthening modern, rights-based approaches that promote autonomy and well-being.

The dialogue also created space to unpack deeply rooted myths and misconceptions, including the belief that women without children have undergone multiple abortions and that family planning leads to infertility or abnormal births. These harmful narratives continue to drive stigma and contribute to unintended teenage pregnancies.

Participants highlighted critical challenges facing young people, including period poverty that exposes girls to transactional relationships, lack of parental support and SRHR guidance, limited access to commodities and accurate information, and weak legal action on defilement cases.

Moving forward, the community committed to strengthening open and honest conversations between parents and children, promoting awareness of rights and responsibilities, and implementing practical actions such as school-based CSE sessions, faith-based information dissemination, and youth-friendly clinic forums.
