From commitment to action!

HEDSO held a follow-up meeting with the Siaya County Director of Health to take stock of progress in the implementation of the RMNCAH Act Regulations developed earlier this year during a five-day consultative meeting in Mombasa.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on progress, identify implementation gaps, strengthen coordination, and explore practical ways to ensure the regulations translate into meaningful improvements in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) services.

From the consultation table in Mombasa to action at county level we are committed to turning policy into practice and ensuring every woman, newborn, child and adolescent can access quality, equitable and responsive health services.

HEDSO Strengthens Capacity for Climate Action and Resilient Communities

Today marked the first day of a four-day training under the DaCCA Programme, focusing on Budget Tracking, Climate Change Adaptation, and Agroecology.

HEDSO is represented by our Field Officer in Busia County, joining other participants to learn, exchange experiences, and explore practical and sustainable approaches to addressing the growing impacts of climate change in our communities.

The training provides an important opportunity to strengthen our institutional capacity to contribute to locally led climate solutions, sustainable community practices, climate-responsive development, and effective budget tracking and advocacy.

Through this engagement, HEDSO continues to strengthen its commitment to building climate-resilient communities while promoting meaningful participation of young people and local communities in climate action, environmental sustainability, and development decision-making.

We look forward to translating the knowledge and skills gained through this four-day journey into practical actions that strengthen community resilience and advance sustainable livelihoods.

STRENGTHENING SRHR POLICY IMPLEMENTATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN SIAYA COUNTY

On 31 August 2026, Health and Economic Development Strategy Organization (HEDSO), in partnership with NIGEE through the SHE SOARS Project, continued its engagement with the Siaya County Health Management Team (CHMT) at Siaya County Referral Hospital.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration with county health leadership and reviewing progress on key Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) priorities affecting adolescents and young people across the county.

A key focus of the discussion was assessing the level and effectiveness of implementation of existing SRHR policies, laws and frameworks, including the RMNCAH Act and related Regulations. The engagement explored progress made, existing implementation gaps, emerging priorities and opportunities for strengthening coordination and accountability to ensure that policy commitments translate into improved services and outcomes for communities.

The discussions further highlighted the importance of meaningful participation of adolescents and young people in health decision-making, stronger linkages between policy and service delivery, and sustained collaboration among government, civil society, communities and young people.

Through the SHE SOARS Project, HEDSO and NIGEE continue to strengthen engagement with county health structures to advance youth-responsive health systems, effective policy implementation, accountability and equitable access to quality SRHR services, particularly for adolescent girls and young women.

HEDSO held a consultative meeting with the Kisumu County Reproductive Health Coordinator to discuss key priorities and opportunities for strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programming and advocacy in Kisumu County. The discussion focused on meaningful engagement of adolescents, adolescent girls and young women, and other young people in SRHR decision-making, advocacy, and the development of youth-responsive services and interventions. HEDSO also followed up on the current state of the SRH Bill in Kisumu County, and the Coordinator informed us that the Bill is still not yet with their office but is currently in the process of being developed and processed. The meeting further explored opportunities for collaboration between HEDSO, the County Government, and other relevant stakeholders in strengthening SRHR advocacy, public participation, and awareness creation, including engagement during key reproductive health events such as World Contraception Day. Overall, the meeting provided an important platform for strengthening partnership and identifying opportunities to jointly promote improved and accessible reproductive health information and services for adolescents and young people in Kisumu County.

HEDSO, in collaboration with CONSA and Health Innovation s Kenya(HIK) successfully conducted the Community Sickle Cell Awareness Initiative – Football for Change on 21 August 2026 at St. Aloys Gem Comprehensive School in Nyakach. The activity brought together community members, young people and football teams for an engaging day of men's and women's football matches aimed at using sports as a platform for promoting sickle cell disease awareness and community engagement. In addition to the football activities, chat corners was conducted, providing participants with an opportunity to engage in health talks, peer support, and community dialogue on sickle cell disease, including awareness care, and the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination. The initiative successfully promoted interaction, learning, and community participation while empowering participants with relevant health information and demonstrating the importance of football and other social activities in advancing health promotion within the community.

HEDSO and other partners attended a breakfast meeting on the Regional Mental Health Conference 2026 and the validation of the Kisumu County Workplace Mental Health Policy. The meeting brought together stakeholders to discuss the importance of promoting mental health and well-being within workplaces and communities.
Key discussions focused on mental health awareness, prevention, early identification, psychosocial support, referral mechanisms, reducing stigma and creating supportive work environments. The policy validation also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to give input on how workplaces can better support employees experiencing mental health challenges.
The meeting emphasized that mental health should be integrated into organisational policies and programmes rather than treated as an isolated issue. Our organisation can strengthen staff wellness activities, create safe spaces for employees to seek support, improve referral linkages and promote awareness on mental health.
The upcoming Regional Mental Health Conference 2026 will also provide an opportunity for stakeholders to share experiences, best practices and strategies for strengthening mental health interventions across the region.
