This year’s global theme, “Gain to Give,” resonates deeply with everything we do at Akina Ties. It is a reminder that what we receive from our community, we pour back into the lives of those who need it most.
Today, on International Women’s Day, I choose to honor two very special children who were direct beneficiaries of your incredible kindness and support. Although they have since departed from us, their determination and resilience remain etched in our hearts.

These two children came from completely different walks of life, but they shared a common bond: a lifelong battle with chronic illness that required extensive, specialized care. They are the true heroes we shout out today.

Despite the immense challenges they faced, our dedicated sponsors and supporters took it upon themselves to ensure we could provide them with a long, high-quality, and dignified life. Because of you:
• They gained access to the best medical care.
• They never went without the medicine they needed.
• They felt the warmth of a community that refused to give up on them

On behalf of Akina Ties, we want to thank each and every one of you. You didn't just give money; you gave life, comfort, and hope until the very end.

When Love Hits a Wall of Law: A Reflection 💔🇰🇪

Yesterday was one of those days that leaves you staring at the ceiling long after the lights go out.

We went for home visits, hoping to reintegrate three young boys back with their families. We went with hope, but we were met with hostility. The very relatives who should be their safety net have closed their doors. It’s heartbreaking to see children who have so much love to give being treated as "burdens" or "outsiders" by their own blood.

This is where my heart breaks, but it’s also where my mind starts to race.
For a long time, I have been happy doing my "silent work"—on the ground, hand-to-hand, heart-to-heart. But yesterday reminded me of a harsh truth: Compassion can provide a meal, but only Policy can provide a permanent shield.

Should our laws be made to ensure that "Family Reintegration" isn't just a phrase, but a legally protected right with resources behind it?

In Kenya, our Children’s Act and our Constitution speak of the "Best Interest of the Child," but on the ground, the enforcement is weak. Relatives can turn their backs because they know the legal consequences are distant or non-existent.

I’m torn between the quiet impact of a mentor and the loud responsibility of a leader.

To my friends, my community, and my fellow advocates: How do we fix a system that allows families to abandon their own?

We have the CT for OVCs which should be 2k per household. I believe that if this cash can also go to relatives who wish to stay with their nieces and nephews left without their parents for one reason or another it would be easier to integrate this children. School to be made free of charge and I mean zero fee for vulnerable children and orphans then intergration could be easier. We have now five years left before all CCIs are closed in Kenya, I hope the government is taking note that the same children intergrated are found on the streets.

I was sad to meet a girl who I was told had a home to go to with relatives in suneka market as a street girl. So is this the integration we are talking about.

I don’t t have all the answers yet, but I know that these three boys—and thousands like them—deserve more than just our prayers. They deserve a country that works for them.

NB: a colleague took me that photo after moving for about five hours yesterday talking to relatives. It left me drained!!

the uncle who had accepted to take in the boys last night called at 6.30am today in the morning vehemently refusing the responsibility. Even though we had promised to take care of the school fee for the children. Children of his brother. May he be alive and well to take care of his children until old age (this is me angry)

Today, our hearts are full. We are returning home from court with a sense of peace and a major victory for our little one.

Last year, the mountain seemed too high to climb. Facing her perpetrator in person was a trauma no child should have to endure, and it felt like the doors to justice were closing. But today, technology served its highest purpose.

Thanks to the provision for virtual testimony, she was able to find her voice and share her truth in a space where she felt safe.

This is a significant milestone, not just for us, but for the protection of minors in the Kenyan justice system. It proves that when we adapt our systems to be child-friendly, we empower the most vulnerable among us.

Now, we look toward the next bridge: ensuring she receives the long-term care, support, and specialized placement she needs to heal and thrive. She is still a child in need of protection, and our focus remains entirely on her recovery.

Thank you to everyone who has stood by us, prayed for us, and believed in the power of justice. The journey continues, but today, we breathe a little easier.

“It takes a village to change a destiny”

They say a person’s past determines their future - but we know a God who rewrites the script!

Today, we are celebrating a literal miracle. Our four boys, who have endured unexplainable trauma in their young lives, have beaten every odd stuck against them. They have officially passed their exams and are headed to university! 🏫🙏

This is what our mission is all about. It’s not just about words; it’s about ✅TransformingLives: Watching healing take place where there was only pain ✅ChangingDestinies: Seeing a path of struggle turn into a path of leadership and higher education.

These young men are proof that trauma does not get the final say. Grace does. Hard work does. And a community that believes in you does!

Congrarulations to our boys. You haven’t just reached a milestone; you’ve stepped into a brand-new destiny. We are so incredibly proud of you! 🎓🥰
