Defilement is on the rise, especially within family setups.

In our session with village and clan elders, one question stood out: What is your role when such cases happen in your areas?

We emphasized this truth, some matters can be mediated, but defilement is not one of them.

Communities often resort to kangaroo courts for different reasons, blurring the line between civil and criminal cases.

Our dialogue highlighted the importance of clear referral pathways, ensuring that criminal cases are handled through the justice system and survivors access the protection they deserve.

Our simple but urgent reflection to everyone is: Are the elders in your community fulfilling their responsibility to uphold justice?

If a man comes home late, drunk and when questioned by his wife he responds with violence only to blame it on alcohol the next morning, is that GBV?

In our dialogue, we reflected on how GBV manifests in homes and communities and how social issues contribute to its persistence.

Beyond alcohol, we asked: What other family level issues contribute to GBV?

Let us name these realities
Let us address the root causes
Let us build homes where respect and accountability are non-negotiable.

Today is the International Day of the Girl....

A few things to note:

1. Every time a parent neglects a girl and she turns to men for basic needs, we teach her that her survival depends on them.

2. Every time she is cut under the guise of tradition and told that pain makes her a woman, we teach her she is ready for anything womanhood entails including marriage.

3. Every time she grows up in violence and runs away, we leave her vulnerable to marriage as escape.

4. Every time she has access to alcohol or substances, her judgment is impaired, leaving her at risk of so much.

5. Every time poverty denies her education, we push her toward marriage as the only option.

We say we want to end child marriage but are we confronting the harmful traditions, societal standards and silenced voices that fuel it?

To mark the International Day of the Girl, with girls at the very center of our celebration, we used skits and creative learning to voice the barriers that continue to expose them to harmful practices.

A survivor reports sexual violence. The community members approach the chief to silence the case because the alleged perpetrator is respected.

What would you do?

This was one of the case scenarios that guided our capacity strengthening session with chiefs and assistant chiefs.

We unpacked what SGBV is, recognized its many forms and reflected on the responsibilities of local administrators when cases are reported.

Through group discussions and case presentations, we looked at the laws that apply, how to respond safely and empathetically and how to ensure timely referrals while preserving confidentiality.

One clear call to action emerged: let chiefs and assistant chiefs use their offices as spaces of trust, places where survivors are protected, heard and supported with dignity.

Right place but what about the message?

In our interactive session with congregants and religious leaders, we reflected on how scriptures have long been used both to heal and to harm.

Religious spaces are powerful forums to advocate against violence and uphold rights, yet most times, teachings are misused to silence survivors or reinforce retrogressive cultures.

The question is not whether religious spaces are the right places, they are.

The challenge lies in ensuring the right message, at the right time with interpretations that protect dignity and strengthen communities.

How do we transform these influential spaces into true sanctuaries of peace and justice?
