Parents often believe they are doing right by their children, but are they?

In our recent parenting session, we asked parents to reflect on what about their own upbringing annoyed them, and whether they have changed those patterns in raising their kids.

Many realized they are.repeating the same cycles. It is worth asking ourselves: if we raise our children exactly as we were raised, what outcomes will we see?

Times are changing, children’s exposure is evolving, and generations are shifting.

Shouldn’t our parenting styles adapt too, moving with the dynamics rather than staying rigid to old socialization?

Parenting is always under the spotlight.

Whenever a child does something right or wrong the question quickly becomes: “Who is their parent?”

Children do not just learn by instruction; they absorb what they see. Behaviour is caught, not taught.

So the big question we asked in our joint parent–child session was: What are we showing our kids?

How can children learn love if homes are filled with conflict, parents fighting, or one parent speaking ill of the other?

As the holiday season unfolds, parenting does not take a break. If anything, vigilance and intentionality matter more.

Let us reflect: Are we being the role models our children need?

"We were cut and nothing happened to us.”
“No matter how many times you sensitize the girls, we will cut them.”

These were the words we used to hear during our ARP parents’ sessions. But with continued sensitization on the physical, psychological, and social effects of FGM something has shifted.

During this session, parents began to reflect on their own lived experiences. They realized that what they went through was not “nothing,” but a violation that left scars beyond the surface.

In sharing their stories, they vowed to protect their daughters from the same pain.

These parents are choosing courage over conformity. They are choosing to break the cycle.
They are choosing to do away with an outdated practice and safeguard the future of their children

Who began the dangerous myth that FGM is “safe” if performed by a doctor in a sterile clinic?

This narrative has misled many and fueled rising cases of medicalized FGM in our region.

Medicalized FGM is still medically unjustified, no matter who performs it or where it happens.

At our ARP workshop, we focused on dispelling these myths and equipping girls with knowledge to recognize risks.

Here’s what we stand for:

We will not alter healthy organs.
We will protect girls.
We will ensure FGM becomes an outdated practice that communities leave behind.

Imagine growing up being told that your cl****is is dangerous or that your genitalia is unclean.

Who would want to carry a “dangerous” or “unclean” organ?

For years, myths and misconceptions around FGM forced girls to believe they must undergo the cut.

But here’s the truth: FGM provides zero health benefits and instead destroys healthy tissue.

That is why our ARP workshop exists, to counter harmful beliefs.

In our first session, girls were guided through demonstrations about the human body, its functions, and its importance.

This unit is the foundation of our manual, empowering them with knowledge and confidence to say NO to FGM.

When you get a cut or injury, do you feel pain only at that spot, or does it radiate, leaving both immediate and lasting scars?

That is what happens when a girl undergoes FGM. The harm is not just physical, it is psychological, with lifelong consequences.

The holiday is here, and so is our ARP workshop. Through songs, poems, and affirmations, girls are amplifying their voices to say NO to FGM.

In our health facilities, GBV cases are reported daily, from so**my and defilement to exploitation, harassment, and assault.

Some have found justice, while others remain pending.

As the focal person shared, IPV cases are rising, with at least one reported every single day.

At our multi-stakeholder engagement, one truth stood out: frequency does not equal normalcy. Just because it happens often does not mean it should be accepted.

We call upon all stakeholders, healthcare providers, administrators, teachers, PWD representatives, and especially the media, to partner in creating awareness both online and offline.

We can amplify survivor voices, strengthen reporting pathways, and ensure justice is not delayed.

Change is possible. We can do it if we put our minds to it.

Media Literacy-Two words, many stages and we got to live them.

We had a media literacy session that gave us a taste of the newsroom, where stories take shape across TV, radio, print, and digital.

We learned to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in all its forms.

With our bench of judges, we spotted bias, challenged fake news, and reflected on how to share information safely.

It was not just theory, it was practice, and it reminded us how powerful and responsible storytelling can be.

Today, we walked a mile in the shoes of media professionals. While we expect them to report cases accurately and uphold their responsibilities, we also carry duties as consumers.

Our session began with a role play on referral pathways, and one truth stood out: systems can fail.

Protocols must be flexible enough to allow follow-ups, and communities must be sensitized to enable seamless reporting, rather than covering up cases.

Awareness alone is not enough. Sustainable partnerships with stakeholders are essential to ensure survivors receive the full support they deserve.

Collaboration is the bridge between reporting and real impact.

Safety begins at home.

As the holidays start, we held a joint parent-child session to remind families that parenting has no break.

In fact, vigilance must rise during this season especially with the rise of cases of abuse.

Parenting is a daily commitment to protect, guide, and nurture.
