The Advocacy Workshop was a reminder that change begins with clarity and collective action.

We came together to spotlight FGM and IPV as key priorities, focusing on strengthening systems and services for IPV and addressing the medicalization of FGM.

Through stakeholder mapping and power analysis, we identified who can influence change at different levels.

We reflected on early influence markers, the shifts that show our messages are resonating, being used and moving onto broader agendas.

We framed messages to raise awareness of survivor services and drafted our Ask with precision: who it targets, what we need, timelines, mandates and follow up mechanisms.

We have been creating awareness… but how do we begin advocating?

That was the question that opened our Advocacy Workshop.

Advocacy is not a one‑time event, it is a process that demands collective voice, influential allies, and persistence.

We explored VAWG in practice through the ecological model, family, community, institutions, and national/policy levels, seeing how each can influence services for survivors.

As the workshop continues, one truth stands out: advocacy takes time. It requires building trust, shifting attitudes, and influencing systems before change becomes visible.

Advocacy is a journey and every step we take together brings us closer to lasting impact.

EPISODE 3-COMPOSTING

Fun fact: the banana stem makes a full circle.

From the farm to fiber extraction, and back again, the leftover waste is composted into rich manure that nourishes new banana plants.

A true example of versatility and sustainability in action.

EPISODE 2-EXTRACTION

After countless trainings, women in our project can now extract clean fiber with confidence.

Just as discarded stems found new life, these women have transformed pain into purpose moving from violence at home to empowerment through capacity building.

We are weaving resilience, dignity, and hope into the banana fiber story.

Stay tuned for Episode 3.

YOU CAN'T BE WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE.

In our career and learning session, boys and girls envisioned themselves as teachers, doctors, innovators, and leaders, roles that reflect safety and dignity.

Yet too often, risks like FGM, assault, defilement, teen pregnancy, and child marriage threaten to derail these dreams.

As we nurture their vision of the future, we must create spaces and opportunities that protect them and allow them to thrive.

Here is to an empowered generation, join us in breaking harmful practices and building a safer path forward..

EPISODE 1-MALE ENGAGEMENT

One thing we quickly realized is that in a largely patriarchal community, male involvement is not just important, it is essential.

Most of the land is owned by men, and for bananas to be planted, harvested, and transformed into livelihoods, men must stand as allies alongside women.

This episode highlighted that truth, showing how collaboration bridges tradition and progress.

Our final training session reminded us that safe programming requires more than intent, we need to:

Invest in structures that hold firm.
Improve policies that protect with clarity.
Shorten reporting chains so survivors are not passed endlessly without progress.

To bring these principles to life, we looked at the components of a safeguarding policy, practiced with investigation tools, case intake, interview guides, evidence logs, risk assessments, referrals, and follow‑up.

We also drafted our Organization Capacity Assessment framework and established a Community of Practice with clear roles for each lead.

We urge all of us to commit to building systems that do not break survivors, but instead uphold their dignity and strengthen justice.

Safeguarding is more than policies, it is lived reality.

In our role play, a 17‑year‑old girl endured abuse by her employer and faced an exhausting journey in pursuit of justice.

Most survivors in workplaces and communities often navigate broken systems, policies without procedures, encountering harassment, exploitation, retraumatization, and delayed justice.

Even when structures exist, clear channels to escalate abuse are often missing.

This reflection calls us to ask: are safeguarding structures enough, or must we do more?

Protection must be intentional, survivor‑centred, inclusive, and accountable.

Safeguarding is strengthened when structures are clear and accessible.

From categorizing case scenarios to discussing the Community Feedback Complaints and Response Mechanisms, we learned that seamless reporting chains, strategic budgeting, and improved policies are essential.

The Do’s and Don’ts matter, but so does the courage to report and the commitment to act. Investing in safeguarding is investing in dignity, protection, and trust, because every individual deserves safety without compromise.
