April is S*xual Assault Awareness Month
This month, we stand with survivors, raise our voices for those who cannot, and reaffirm our commitment to preventing s*xual violence in every form.

At VSL, this work is not limited to April. we confront these crimes all year‑round — identifying victims, pursuing offenders, and connecting survivors with the support they deserve.

S*xual assault leaves lasting impacts, but so does awareness, education, and a community that refuses to look away. Together, we can help create safer spaces, stronger support systems, and a future where every person is treated with dignity and respect.

We are each protected against discrimination based on our s*xual orientation, gender identity and/or expression and s*x characteristics under the Kenyan constitution and other international human rights law.

However, in practice our communities continue to discriminates against individuals on the basis of their s*xual orientation or gender identity and expression it's on this backdrop, today we held a capacity strengthening session for transgender group, empowering them with information on their fundamental rights as enshrined in our constitution and how to reclaim them, building their refferal network in access their SRHR and enhancing their gender based violence prevention & response pathways.

Every day in Kenya, 54 people are infected with HIV and another 57 die from Aids-related illness, according to data from the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council.

The Kenya Aids Response Progress Report 2025 shows that new infections rose from 16,752 in 2024 to 19,991 in 2025, while Aids-related deaths climbed from 20,480 to 21,007 over the same period. The solution to mitigating the surging numbers lies in rebuilding the community systems that donor cuts have significantly affected and investing urgently in sensitisation campaigns targeted at key populations

As VSL we shall beef up our awareness, particularly to KPs, so they can come in for testing and be put on care incase they turn infected. For HIV negative KPs, we will create awareness to enhance the use of injectable lenacapavir (LEN) twice a year as an additional pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for HIV prevention.

Today is international day of women judges, it's an important day to highlight the women's participation in the justice system, yet women remain significantly underrepresented in this field.

The 2026 International Women's day (IWD) will be observed under the theme, 'Rights. Justice, Action. For ALL Women and Girls', highlighting the need for collective action and continued call for gender equality and the empowerment of women globally. On this day we celebrate and recognize women's contribution to nation building and their efforts in bridging the gender gap.

As VSL we believe International Women's Day is powered by the collective action and shared ownership to drive gender parity.

The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights, we call upon men and alwomen to make International Women's Day a day to truly make a positive difference for women and girls across the world.

March 3rd was International S*x Workers Rights Day, a day marked to advocate for the rights, safety, and dignity of s*x workers, as VSL in collaboration with other CSO actors, we raised our voice on the need for decriminalization s*x work and promoting healthy and safe working environment. S*x work has been practiced since ancient times, and yet, in modern days s*x workers face countless issues stemming from persisting stigma, marginalization, and lack of safe working conditions, this has pushed s*x workers to the periphery , many have reported being subjected to GBV that has lead to their mental breakdown.

S*x workers are denied access to the benefits and rights afforded to other workers under labour laws and face the risk of criminalisation. We marked the day with simple and a clear massage: S*x work is work, Work is dignity, Dignity is non-negotiable.

Key populations’ mental health and psychosocial needs are deeply intertwined with GBV, as survivors, they often grapple with profound emotional and psychological trauma. Addressing these mental and psychosocial need is essential in helping survivors of GBV rebuild their lives, healing communities and breaking the cycle of violence.

VSL is on the frontlines of providing critical psychosocial support to GBV survivors in kisii south, where deeply rooted gender inequities have contributed to high rates of GBV against key populations.

Kenya has taken a major step forward in HIV prevention with the arrival of 21,000 starter doses of Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable medicine.

This marks the beginning of introducing a twice-yearly HIV prevention option, expanding choices beyond daily oral PrEP. The Ministry of Health plans an initial rollout in priority counties, with more doses expected to follow.

Lenacapavir is for people who are HIV-negative and is not a vaccine or cure. Treatment and care for people living with HIV remain essential.

A significant moment for prevention, choice, and public health progress in Kenya.
