ISCoD Kenya is an NGO that empowers communities by advancing WASH, environmental sustainability, climate action, and tech-driven development.

We have operate in over 6 counties in western part of Kenya and beyond through strategic partnerships. Initiative for Sustainable Community Development (ISCoD) NGO is a social enterprise that aims to ensure access to clean, safe, and enough water by everyone, starting with the rural Kisii community. This is made possible through conservation and spring revival activities, construction of water har

vesting and supply infrastructure and connecting beneficiaries, and quality monitoring at its in-house laboratory.

🌱💧 A milestone worth celebrating! 🎉

We've successfully concluded Cohort I of our Youth-Led Integrated Water Harvesting & Storage, Springs Conservation and Sustainability Initiative in Kisii, funded by the European Union in partnership with Global Youth Mobilization.

Community groups were equipped with practical, water-smart farming skills, including vertical gardening and creative use of recycled materials to conserve water while maximizing harvests in small spaces.

To turn knowledge into action, every participant received a 200-litre water harvesting drum to kick-start their rainwater harvesting journey.

🚀 What's next? In August, we'll be conducting practical vertical gardening demonstrations as participants begin implementing these climate-smart solutions in their own communities.

Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2026
21st–26th June 2026 | Cape Town, South Africa

We are excited to have been part of the SRI Congress 2026, where our team contributed to conversations on “Trash for Sustainable Community Empowerment through the Circular Economy (TRACE).”

In collaboration with Kisii University, University of Limpopo, and Tamale Technical University, Ghana, we co-facilitated a parallel session exploring how different forms of waste, including plastic waste, can be transformed into valuable products that generate income, create employment opportunities, and empower youth and women.

The session also provided a great learning opportunity on how South Africa is advancing solid waste management, while highlighting shared waste management challenges across Kenya and other African contexts. These insights reinforced the need for practical, community-driven, and scalable solutions.

Together, through innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, we can turn waste into opportunity and contribute to ending solid waste management challenges across the continent and beyond.

Yesterday, 10th June 2026, we continued our community training sessions, with a strong focus on women groups, who remain among the most affected by household water shortages.

The training brought together representatives from 10 community based groups most drawn from Kitutu Chache North Subcounty, Kisii County

The session was held at Marani DC Social Hall and focused on practical, community-led solutions for improving water access and sustainability.

Key areas covered included rainwater harvesting, water conservation practices such as reusing grey water for kitchen gardens, and feasible investment approaches for larger water storage initiatives.

One key insight from the training was that despite the Kisii region receiving relatively high rainfall, averaging 1,500 mm annually, many households and community groups have not fully embraced water harvesting, storage, and conservation practices. This continues to place pressure on local water sources, especially during the dry season.

Through the support of the Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF), funded by the European Union and Global Youth Mobilization initiative, we hope to contribute positively towards reversing this trend while empowering communities with practical knowledge and sustainable solutions.

Together, we can strengthen community resilience, improve household water security, and promote sustainable water management.

ISCoD Kenya at the SRI Conference 2026

We are excited to announce that ISCoD Kenya will be part of the Sustainability, Research and Innovation Congress 2026, taking place from 22nd–26th June 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, and online.

Our Executive Director, Alicia Moraa, will be among the panelists, alongside Dr. Charles Rono from Kisii University and other distinguished speakers.

With climate change exacerbating the issue, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more urgent.l:
Kisii County receives over 1500mm of rainfall every year… yet many rural households still struggle to access clean and safe water.

With climate change making things worse, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more urgent.

We’re proud to launch the Integrated Community-Based Water Harvesting, Safe Storage & Sustainability Project, empowering communities with skills, systems, and solutions.

With support from Youth Empowerment Fund, Global Youth Mobilization, and the European Union, we will:
✔ Train 30+ community groups
✔ Promote rainwater harvesting & safe storage
✔ Build sustainable water management systems
✔ Support financial resilience for water security

To kick things off, each group will receive water storage tanks for their members.
At ISCoD Kenya, we believe in empowered communities, lasting impact, and resilient futures.

Excited to share that our Executive Director, Alicia Moraa, has been selected as a Community Leader in the YOMA programme, an initiative supported by YOMA, UNICEF, Generation Unlimited, and RLabs.

This opportunity will allow her to continue working with young people, connecting them to opportunities, skills, and platforms that empower them to take action and shape the future of their communities.

We hosted 4th-year HR students from Kisii University at our Kisii office this week.

Great conversations on NGO and social enterprise operations, real-world challenges, and navigating today’s complex landscape.

We also shared opportunities around internships, volunteering, and strengthening academia–community linkages through our ongoing partnership.

At ISCoD, we remain committed to collaborating with local institutions to drive sustainable community development.

Honored to have participated in the SASS–SHS Symposium on Ethics, Climate Change, Health & Social Protection at Kisii University (12–13 Feb 2026).

We presented “Intersection of Climate Change, Environmental Sustainability, and Community Well-being”, highlighting how climate action and community-driven approaches can strengthen resilience and improve local well-being.

The symposium convened scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to explore climate resilience, ethical leadership, digital innovation, indigenous knowledge, and health equity—an inspiring space for collaboration toward inclusive, sustainable solutions.

Grateful to contribute and learn alongside such a diverse community.

Friday, 6th February 2026, we stood where research meets reality.

Our Executive Director, Alicia Moraa, represented ISCoD NGO Kenya at the Climate Change, Environment, and Health Research & Networking Workshop in Dallas.

Hosted by Kisii University & University of Nottingham, the conversations went beyond theory. We tackled:

🌱 Climate change & health inequalities in fishing communities.
📊 Grant management & accountability.
⚖️ Ethics, Equity, Diversity & linking research to policy.
🤝 Community engagement & intervention design.

It was a powerful display of Academia, Government, and NGOs uniting to design projects that actually work for our communities. We remain committed to ensuring research doesn't just sit on a shelf, but drives sustainable change.
