🐾 World Animal Day 2026 – Risa Village 🌍

Yesterday, 3rd October 2026, we proudly joined partners in celebrating World Animal Day in style at Risa Village. 🐘🦁🌿

The event was organised by the Born Free Kenya and brought together conservation and community partners, including Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Lion Guardians, WWF-Kenya, Amboseli Ecosystem Trust, Amboseli Trust for Elephants, Big Life Foundation, Mara Elephant Project, Dandelion Africa, and government and community representatives.

Greening Oloitokitok was honoured to be part of this important celebration and contributed 400 indigenous trees towards the activity. 🌱💚

It was a beautiful day of raising awareness, celebrating wildlife and strengthening the message that people, animals and nature can thrive together.

Together for wildlife. Together for nature. Together for our communities. 🌍🐘

WORLD ANIMAL DAY 2026 – RISA VILLAGE 🐾🌍

Tomorrow, 3rd October, Greening Oloitokitok will join different stakeholders and the community in Risa Village to commemorate World Animal Day. 🌱🐘🦒

This year’s celebration is a reminder that protecting animals also means protecting the environment they depend on. Wildlife, livestock and other animals are an important part of our ecosystems and communities.

🌳 As part of this important activity, Greening Oloitokitok will donate 400 trees to support environmental conservation, restoration and the creation of healthier habitats for both people and animals.

We are proud to stand together with other stakeholders and the community to promote conservation, environmental education, responsible stewardship and peaceful coexistence between people and animals.

An apiary* is basically a (bee farm)🐝

Simple definition:
An apiary= a place where beehives are kept and managed for honey production and bee products.

Think of it like:
- Chicken coop→ for chickens
- Cattle boma → for cows
- Apiary→ for bees

Key things about an apiary:

1. What’s in it
- 1 or more beehives. Could be 5 hives in a backyard, or 200 hives on a farm
- Hive stands, water source, shade trees
- Space for the beekeeper to work safely

2. What happens there
- Bees live, forage, and make honey
- Beekeeper inspects hives, feeds bees, controls pests, harvests honey/wax/propolis
- New colonies are added or splits are made

3. Types of apiaries
- Backyard apiary: 2-10 hives near home
- Commercial apiary: 50-500+ hives for business like Jungle Honey Enterprises
- Stationary apiary: Hives stay in one place year-round
- Migratory apiary: Hives are moved to follow flowers/crops

Why not just leave hives anywhere?
Because bees need:
1. Safety from people, animals, theft
2. Good forage - flowers within 2-3km
3. Water + shade + wind protection
4. Easy access for the beekeeper

So an apiary is a planned, managed "bee neighborhood"
