This Basic Education and Literacy Month, we are proud to celebrate our very own, Rtn. Dr. Mugambi Mwirigi , on the launch of 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚: 𝐓𝐚𝐱 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, co-authored with Emmah Kithinji

The book takes big ideas like tax, customs, civic responsibility and integrity and turns them into simple, engaging stories that children can understand and connect with. It is a powerful reminder that education is not only about what children learn in the classroom, but also about the values and understanding we nurture from an early age.

As Mugambi puts it, “𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰, 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲.”

This aligns beautifully with Rotary’s commitment to 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲, because when we equip children with knowledge, values and the confidence to understand their world, we are helping shape the communities they will lead tomorrow.

Last weekend, we took the Digital Literacy Program (DLP) all the way to Western Kenya, reaching 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐍𝐨. 𝟏𝟏, 𝟏𝟐 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟏𝟑 - 𝐊𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, 𝐑𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐮𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥.

For us, the DLP has always been about more than putting computers in a classroom. It is about creating access, opening up possibilities and giving learners the tools to explore a world that is increasingly digital.

At each school, we spent time with the learners and teachers, setting up digital learning spaces and creating opportunities for young people to engage with technology in ways that can shape their learning and their futures.

We could not do this alone.

From Nairobi to Western Kenya, we are reminded that impact is not about how far the journey is. It is about being willing to make the journey.
