This Earth Day, we’re proud to introduce a bold step toward a greener, more resilient future.

Meet the CARL-B Project — Climate Agro-Resilient Livelihoods for Biodiversity (CARL-B) — a 3-year initiative (2026–2028) supported by Vi Agroforestry and implemented in Kilifi South and Ganze Sub-Counties.

Rooted in communities across Shimo la Tewa, Mtepeni, Chasimba, Mwarakaya, Sokoke, and Ganze wards, the project will empower 1,000 smallholder farmers, strengthen 40 farmer groups, and reach over 5,000 people.

🌱 Together, we aim to:

a)Build climate-resilient livelihoods
b)Increase household incomes
c)Strengthen farmer organizations with a focus on gender equality
d)Restore and protect biodiversity through sustainable agroecosystems

As we celebrate Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to people, planet, and prosperity — because resilient communities are the foundation of a sustainable future.

We hosted pharmacy students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) at KWETU for an educational tour focused on coastal trees and their medicinal value.

The students explored key species such as mangroves, neem trees, and moringa, gaining insights into their health and environmental benefits. They also supported our organization by purchasing nature-based products, including multifloral honey, mangrove honey, moringa powder, and neem powder.

The visit provided a meaningful opportunity to connect academic knowledge with practical conservation.

Today at Kwetu Training Centre, the WorldFish team conducted a partial harvest from one of the Pond IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture) pilot systems. The system integrates tilapia, sea cucumbers, and gastropods, demonstrating how different species can work together to improve productivity and sustainability.
From just one pond harvest, we obtained approximately 75kg of fish, with tilapia averaging around 320g within only six months. The harvest also showed impressive yields of sea cucumbers, further confirming the productivity and efficiency of integrated aquaculture systems.
These encouraging results highlight the potential of IMTA to improve fish production, diversify farmers’ income streams, and strengthen climate-resilient aquaculture systems for coastal communities.
As Kwetu Training Centre continues to serve as a training and innovation hub, these pilots are generating the evidence needed to scale IMTA across coastal Kenya, supporting the blue economy and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
