Ending Gender-Based Violence Starts With Breaking the Silence.

Sixth August reminded US of five things:

1. GBV is much bigger than the cases we hear about. So much happens quietly and goes unreported.
2. People need to know where to go and who to turn to when violence happens. Awareness without access to support is not enough.
3. Ending GBV requires everyone — government, community leaders, religious leaders, young people, families and organisations — to take responsibility.
4. We need spaces in Kilifi where people can safely come forward, be heard and be connected to help. This is one of the reasons having a physical Dada Yangu office matters.
5. And then there was the mural. Watching people stop their cars, slow down on their motorbikes and stand there reading it reminded me that advocacy doesn’t always need a microphone. Sometimes, a message on a wall can make someone stop, think and start a conversation.

Last Wednesday, we engaged key populations in Malindi in a meaningful roundtable discussion on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), focusing on prevention, reporting mechanisms, survivor support services, and the role of communities in creating safer environments for all.

Through open dialogue and shared experiences, participants deepened their understanding of GBV and explored practical ways to promote dignity, protection, and human rights. The session concluded with participant presentations, where groups shared key insights, recommendations, and commitments toward strengthening community-led responses to GBV.

Together, we continue advancing awareness, accountability, and collective action for safer and more inclusive communities.
