World Mental Health Day 2025 is here with us!

Our communities face recurring drought, floods along the Sabaki/Galana, disease outbreaks, and religious extremism —crises that strain families, disrupt schools and livelihoods, and heighten stress and trauma.

Globally, nearly 1 in 3 people affected by disasters experience significant mental health consequences.

This year’s theme—Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies—speaks directly to our reality: help must be close, timely and dignified for everyone in Kilifi.

Join us on Friday, Oct 10th, 2025 as from 8:00am at Buntwani Grounds, Malindi for an Awareness Walk, testimonials, Zumba, arts, soccer and interactive sessions.

Learn where to get support in Kilifi, connect with community responders, and add your voice to making mental health part of every emergency plan.

No one should face a catastrophe alone.

🌍 World Su***de Prevention Day 2025
🗓 Wednesday, 10th September 2025
🕖 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
📍 Virtual Webinar ( https://meet.google.com/exv-phvz-ozt )

This year, the Kilifi County Department of Health Services joins the global community in marking World Su***de Prevention Day under the theme: “Changing the Narrative”

In line with this theme, we will host a thought-provoking webinar titled:
💡 “Advancing Mental Health Justice: Unpacking Decriminalization of Su***de in Kenya”

Earlier this year, Kenya made a landmark step toward mental health justice when the High Court declared Section 226 of the Penal Code—which criminalized attempted su***de—unconstitutional. This progressive ruling recognizes su***de as a mental health concern rather than a crime, shifting focus from punishment to compassion, support, and prevention.

👥 Panelists:

* Mr. Vespus Chenja – Counseling Psychologist & KCPA Kilifi Chair
* Magistrate Ivy Wasike – Judiciary of Kenya

🎤 Moderator:

* Dr. Mary Bitta – Mental Health Researcher

This interactive session will unpack what this ruling means for individuals, communities, and Kenya’s mental health and justice systems—while highlighting collective actions needed to truly change the narrative around su***de.

Asking “Are you thinking about su***de?” can save a life.

For every life lost, 20 or more people make a su***de attempt (WHO)—that’s many chances to step in and change the story.

• Notice changes in mood, sleep, or behavior.
• Ask directly.
• Listen without judgment. Then, connect to help

Most people who have suicidal thoughts recover with support.

Asking “Are you really okay?” can save a life. In Kilifi (FY24/25), 68 su***de deaths were reported; 55 were men (80.9%).

This mirrors Kenya’s and global pattern, whereby most recorded deaths are among men.

Changing the narrative means Notice–Ask–Listen–Connect.
