Yesterday, together with the County Government of Kilifi ,partners, and community members, we gathered at Godoma Technical Training Institute in Ganze Subcounty to kick off this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
This year, we are raising awareness about the increasing forms of digital harm affecting women and girls, and the urgent need to promote safety and dignity in online spaces.

Online platforms should enable young women and girls to learn, connect, and grow not expose them to harassment, cyberbullying, or violations of their privacy. Although these harms occur digitally, their impact is deeply personal and long-lasting.

At Desire Youth Initiative, in collaboration with the County Government of Kilifi and other partners, we remain committed to creating safe online and offline environments for women and girls. By empowering young people with digital safety knowledge and supportive networks, we strive to ensure every girl can participate confidently and freely in digital spaces.

As the 16 Days of Activism continues, we invite you to reflect on your role in standing against all forms of online gender-based violence.

We are proud to champion feminist leadership and inclusive community spaces.

As we gear up to participate in the 3rd Feminist Republik Festival, our ushers have successfully completed a powerful, feminist-centered training session. The training strengthened their skills in feminist values, transformative care, conflict sensitivity, and effective communication ensuring they can create warm, dignified, and inclusive spaces throughout the festival.

This work reflects our ongoing commitment to uplifting feminist voices, nurturing young feminist leaders, and advancing gender justice.

We gratefully acknowledge Urgent Action Fund Africa for its steadfast support of grassroots feminist organizations like ours. Their solidarity and investment make it possible for young feminist leaders to thrive and for community-rooted initiatives to flourish.

The Feminist Republik Festival continues to be a vital space for collective liberation and feminist expression, and we are delighted to contribute to its growth and brilliance.

Under the Nuru Project, supported by Oxfam Kenya , We successfully delivered an impactful Intergenerational Dialogue Ganze Location, Ganze Sub-County.
The session aimed to strengthen community-led structures for the prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV) through inclusive, cross-generational engagement.

The dialogue brought together youth, adults, elders, and persons with disabilities, creating a safe platform for honest conversations about the forms of GBV affecting the community, as well as the harmful norms and systemic barriers that undermine the safety and wellbeing of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.

Participants shared real experiences and highlighted issues such as early and forced marriage, sexual exploitation, discrimination against persons with disabilities, and the culture of silence that prevents survivors from seeking help. These reflections allowed the community to jointly examine root causes, including poverty, stigma, limited access to education, and deeply entrenched cultural expectations.

Crucially, the dialogue produced community-driven, practical action points, such as:
✔ Strengthening GBV reporting and referral pathways
✔ Expanding inclusive sensitization on rights and protection
✔ Encouraging open communication between parents and children
✔ Enhancing supportive structures for survivors
✔ Increasing male and youth engagement in GBV prevention

The session reaffirmed the power of locally led dialogue in fostering accountability, shifting harmful norms, and strengthening protection mechanisms.

Standing Up for Safe and Equal Communities 💪

In the lead-up to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, We joined hands with fellow youth advocates from the Kilifi Toolkit to organize a community town hall in Mkoroshoni.

The dialogue focused on the rising insecurity within our neighborhoods — from the harassment faced by boda boda riders to the violence affecting young women, girls, and the elderly. Participants had the chance to share experiences, identify the root causes, and co-create solutions that foster lasting peace and safety.

This town hall was a strong reminder that ending gender-based violence starts with each of us — in our families, on our streets, and in every community space we share.

We deeply appreciate the support from Peace Brigades International – Kenya Project, whose partnership continues to strengthen local efforts toward peaceful and inclusive communities.

Desire Youth Initiative , we remain committed to building a society where every person can live free from fear and violence — through youth leadership, dialogue, and collective action.

Together, we are shaping safer, stronger, and more united communities.

🌍 Empowering Young Mothers through SRHR Awareness 🌼

On October 9th, Desire Youth Initiative successfully held an impactful engagement with young mothers aged 15–24, focusing on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and their role in HIV prevention.

Building Safer Futures for Girls – One Conversation at a Time

In the lead-up to the International Day of the Girl Child, we had the privilege of engaging directly with the vibrant community in Kilifi. Through heartfelt dialogues, we explored how every member of society – parents, elders, youth and local leaders – plays a critical role in protecting, uplifting, and empowering girls.

These discussions challenged deep-rooted practices, sparked honest reflection, and encouraged a community-wide commitment to ending early marriages and harmful gender norms. The transformation begins at the grassroots .

This impactful engagement was made possible with the invaluable support of Peace Brigades International - Kenya Project

When a community stands for girls, their future becomes unstoppable.

We participated in a key stakeholder meeting hosted by the Kilifi County Department of Health to review and validate the first draft of the Kilifi County Sexuality Education Guide.

The session brought together diverse voices to provide feedback, share perspectives, and suggest improvements to ensure the guide reflects the realities and needs of young people across the county. Discussions focused on practical and inclusive strategies to implement the guide in different learning settings.

This collaborative process marks an important milestone in the county’s efforts to develop a localized, comprehensive sexuality education framework that is inclusive, culturally relevant, and empowering for all youth.

👏 Honored to contribute to this meaningful and transformative initiative.

Strengthening Systems to Combat Gender-Based Violence: A Collaborative Approach

Desire Youth Initiative recently facilitated a strategic radio dialogue at Coco Fam Studio, convening key stakeholders including Georgina Dulu , Director at the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action, Kilifi County, and Adams Chiru, Senior Probation Officer Kilifi County.

This session focused on enhancing the understanding and implementation of:
🔹 Effective GBV Referral Pathways
🔹 Survivor Safety and Protection Measures
🔹 Whistleblowing Frameworks
🔹 Witness Protection Protocols

Such engagements are pivotal in strengthening a coordinated, multi-sectoral response to GBV — ensuring survivors are met with timely, informed, and compassionate support.

This activity was implemented as part of the Nuru Project, a community-driven initiative designed to prevent and respond to Gender-Based Violence through awareness, accountability, and access to justice.

We deeply appreciate the continued partnership and financial support of Oxfam Kenya whose collaboration enables us to deliver sustainable, community-led solutions in the fight against GBV.

At Desire youth intiative , we remain steadfast in our commitment to evidence-based programming, grassroots advocacy, and institutional capacity strengthening — all in service of a more just and gender-equal society.

Together, we are laying the groundwork for lasting impact.
