Youth and Women lead organisation tackling GBV, SRHR, P-CVE, Economic growth and Climate justice

A skill can be more than something you learn, it can become a pathway to possibility.

Behind every stitch is a woman learning to create, solve problems, express her creativity and turn her hands into a source of opportunity.

Through the Nuru Project Phase II, women participating in the tailoring skills training are gaining practical knowledge that goes beyond the classroom. They are learning to work with precision, explore their creativity and build confidence in what they can create with their own hands.

From the first measurement to the final stitch, every step is part of a journey one that reminds us that meaningful change can begin with a skill, grow through practice and open the door to new possibilities.

At Desire Youth Initiative, we value spaces where women can learn, grow and shape opportunities for themselves and their communities.

What does peace look like when we bring it closer to home?

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is found in the choices we make every day in listening instead of dividing, choosing dialogue over silence, creating safe spaces and ensuring every voice is valued.

On this International Day of Peace, we reflect on the role each of us play in building communities rooted in dignity, inclusion, justice and hope.

At Desire Youth Initiative, we believe lasting peace begins with people and grows through collective action. Every conversation, every voice heard and every effort to create safer, more inclusive communities is a step towards a more peaceful future.

Peace is not only something we hope for. It is something we build together, every day.

When a survivor speaks up, does the system move with them or leave them to navigate it alone?

We convened a Duty Bearers Workshop in Ganze Sub County under the Nuru Project Phase II, bringing stakeholders together to reflect on how GBV cases are reported, referred and followed up across different levels of response.

The discussion highlighted gaps that can affect access to justice including communication breakdowns, delays, witnesses failing to show up and the difficulty some survivors face in speaking out. At the same time, existing coordination structures such as the Gender Technical Working Group and Sub-County GBV Network provide important spaces for strengthening collaboration.

The takeaway was simple: a case should not lose momentum at the point of referral. Every handover should move a survivor closer to support, protection and justice.

From a Stitch to a Story

Every stitch carries a possibility. Every skill can become a stepping stone. And every woman who learns has another tool to shape what comes next.

Through the NURU Project, our first Tailoring Cohort creates a space for women to turn creativity into practical skills, skills into opportunity and opportunity into greater confidence and independence.

It’s not just about learning to sew. It’s about building something of your own one stitch, one idea and one possibility at a time.

This is where skills take shape and possibilities begin.

Not every pain should be normalised. Not every period pain should be endured in silence.

For many women and girls, severe menstrual pain is often dismissed with phrases like “it’s just part of being a woman.” But persistent and severe pain can be a sign that something more needs attention.

Endometriosis is more than painful periods. It is a health condition that can affect a person's physical well-being, daily life, education, work, relationships and quality of life.

This is why awareness matters.

By creating spaces for honest conversations around menstrual and reproductive health, we can challenge stigma, encourage early support seeking and ensure that women and girls feel heard, believed and supported.

At Desire Youth Initiative, we believe that access to accurate information and supportive conversations is an important part of empowering young people and communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Listen to your body. Believe people when they speak about their pain. Break the silence.

What happens when men stop being spectators in the fight against gender-based violence and start asking what they can change?

At the third Male Sensitisation Forum on Gender-Based Violence, held in Kitengwani, Ganze Sub-County, men engaged in open discussions on the realities that continue to shape violence in families and communities.

The conversation explored: unequal power, harmful traditions, early and forced marriages, child labour, alcohol abuse, peer pressure, poverty and limited access to opportunities and how these factors can contribute to vulnerability and violence.

Participants also examined consent, the Sexual Offences Act and the Penal Code, while raising important questions around reporting, accountability, corruption and the protection of witnesses from intimidation or retaliation.

But awareness alone is not enough.

Preventing GBV requires challenging harmful norms, respecting consent, supporting survivors and speaking up when violence is normalised or ignored.

Because lasting change does not begin when a case reaches a courtroom. It begins with the choices we make in our homes, relationships and communities every day.

Implemented by Desire Youth Initiative with support from the Women’s Rights Fund from Oxfam Kenya.

In Petanguo, Ganze Sub-County, we convened an Intergenerational Dialogue that brought together young people, parents, elders and persons with disabilities to openly discuss the realities of gender-based violence and the beliefs, practices and systems that allow it to persist.

Participants reflected on issues ranging from harmful cultural practices and barriers to girls' education to sexual violence affecting boys, women and persons with disabilities forms of violence that often remain hidden because of stigma, fear and silence.

The dialogue challenged victim blaming and encouraged participants to look at practical ways communities can prevent GBV, including strengthening family communication, promoting inclusive community education, improving survivor support and creating safer reporting mechanisms.

The conversations reinforced an important message: "preventing GBV is a collective responsibility, and every generation has a role to play."

The dialogue was convened by Desire Youth Initiative with support from Oxfam Kenya under the Nuru Project.

Good policies are built through collaboration, evidence and the voices of the people they are designed to serve.

We were pleased to participate in a two-day stakeholder workshop to review the Adolescent and Young People (AYP) Health Strategy and the Kilifi County Sexuality Education Guide alongside civil society organizations, county government representatives and other key stakeholders.

The consultative process provided an opportunity to strengthen these guiding documents by ensuring they respond to the lived experiences, challenges and aspirations of adolescents and young people aged 10–24 years in Kilifi County.

We appreciate the collective commitment demonstrated throughout the review process and look forward to the finalization of these frameworks, which have the potential to strengthen adolescent health, wellbeing and access to accurate, age-appropriate information across the county.

When young people realities inform policy, stronger and more responsive systems become possible.

Ending Gender Based Violence requires everyone at the table. Men and boys are not just part of the conversation they are part of the solution.

On 29th July 2026, Desire Youth Initiative convened a Male Sensitisation Dialogue in Ganze Sub-County after identifying knowledge gaps among men on consent, the Sexual Offences Act and relevant provisions of the Penal Code during our initial implementation.

The dialogue created a safe space for participants to openly discuss the drivers of Gender-Based Violence within their communities, including harmful gender norms, alcohol and substance abuse, unemployment, poverty, early marriage and family conflict. Together, participants also explored practical solutions such as promoting positive masculinity, shared family responsibility, respect for consent and stronger community accountability.

At Desire Youth Initiative, we believe that preventing GBV requires engaging men as informed allies who can challenge harmful norms and contribute to safer, more equitable communities.

We thank everyone who participated and shared their experiences and perspectives.
