One Girl Can

One Girl Can One Girl can make an impact when you believe in her potential. We Educate. We Mentor. We Train.

One Girl Can was born out of a need to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement and provide an opportunity for the brightest and most promising girls in rural Africa to develop substantial and meaningful careers through a university or post-secondary school education. Educating girls is one of the fastest and most effective ways of promoting global economic development, and the key to

ultimately ending poverty and injustice for women. It is also one of the highest return investments in the developing world.

Today, we want to recognize the Feminism Club at Burnaby South Secondary School for raising funds through a school bake sale to help fund the high school education of a One Girl Can student in Kenya.

We are inspired by these young changemakers and the impact they are already making.

Thank you for opening a door so One Girl Can change the world.

Earlier this month, some of our .doors.foundation mentors gathered in Nairobi to share stories and reflections from their mentorship partnerships with graduates.

What continues to inspire us most is watching this global community of changemakers grow through a shared commitment to opening doors so that one girl can change the world.

As part of our Pay It Forward program, One Girl Can university graduates return to their former high schools to mentor the next generation of girls.

Last week, Emily returned to Mbooni High School for the first time in 10 years. She shared her story and reminded students of the importance of working hard, and not allowing their circumstances to define their future.

The Cycle of Empowerment continues.

Meet Velma, a 14-year-old girl from rural Kenya with big dreams.

This past March, during a visit to our partner schools in Kenya, our CEO Michelle met Velma, who immediately stood out. She was curious and full of questions.

Velma shared that she was writing a book about a girl who, against all odds, received an education and changed the world. Then she asked Michelle: “Can you help me find a publisher?”

Seven weeks later, Michelle shared Velma’s story on stage at the conference.

Then Diane walked into the One Girl Can activation. Not only did Diane offer to help Velma pursue her dream of becoming an author, she also sponsored Velma’s full high school education.

Thank you Diane for opening a door so one girl can change the world.

This match was meant to be. Recently at the conference, Tugce came to the One Girl Can activation wanting to sponsor Joy. In between sessions, she kept insisting that no one else sponsor Joy before she could get back.

Last week, when visited Nembu High School, she shared that story with Joy. Hearing how determined Tugce was to sponsor her deeply moved her. Joy said no one had ever made her feel that special before.

She was bursting with joy and insisted on filming a video to personally share her gratitude.
