One Girl Can was born out of a need to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement and provide an opportunity for the brightest and most promising girls in rural Africa to develop substantial and meaningful careers through a university or post-secondary school education. Educating girls is one of the fastest and most effective ways of promoting global economic development, and the key to

ultimately ending poverty and injustice for women. It is also one of the highest return investments in the developing world.

This upcoming Saturday is International Day of Charity and our goal is to provide school supplies for 100 Girls.

For $220, you can provide a One Girl Can high school student in Kenya with her school supplies for the entire year—including a uniform, jacket, shoes, school bag, books and stationery.

Having what she needs means she can walk into school prepared and focus on her education and the future she is working toward.

Meet Monica.

Awarded a One Girl Can high school scholarship this spring, Monica has overcome significant personal challenges but remains undeterred in pursuing her goals.

At a recent EMPOWER ME workshop, she shared that she has three career aspirations and created SMART goals to help guide her academic journey.

A scholarship opens the door to education, but that's only part of the journey. Through our EMPOWER ME workshops, students develop the confidence and practical tools they need to stay focused and achieve their goals.

We're excited to see where Monica's journey takes her.

During a recent visit to Nembu High School, our CEO, Michelle Sutter, led a YOU Matter workshop about recognizing our own worth, speaking up for those whose voices aren't being heard, and lifting one another up.

After the workshop, a student named Tracy approached Michelle with a concern. Her classmate, Brenda, had been absent from school for several weeks, and she wanted to know why.

We soon learned that Brenda's family could no longer afford her school fees. A straight-A student, Brenda was no longer able to attend school.

When Michelle shared Brenda's story with her friend, Omar , he immediately stepped forward to sponsor Brenda's 3-year high school education.

None of this would have happened if Tracy hadn't spoken up. Today, Brenda is returning to school because one student chose to use her voice, and another person chose to act.

Thank you, Tracy, for reminding us that one voice can make a difference. And thank you, Omar, for ensuring Brenda can return to school and continue pursuing her education.

As a special coincidence, Brenda, Omar, and his daughter all share the same birthday: May 13!

A few years ago, Rita stood in her high school holding a sign that read, "I want to be a Software Engineer."

Today, that dream is her reality.

After receiving both a One Girl Can high school and university scholarship, Rita is now a Software Engineer with Transoft Solutions who also funded her education. This year, she has returned to her former school, Masinga, three times to help deliver our EMPOWER ME workshops.

Through our Pay It Forward program, One Girl Can graduates return to their high schools to share their stories and inspire the next generation. There is no better reminder of what's possible than hearing from someone who once sat in the same classroom and is now living the future she dreamed of.

The Cycle of Empowerment continues.

To celebrate the life of Grace Webster, her friends and family chose to honour her memory in a meaningful way by sponsoring the education of two young women through One Girl Can.

Their collective generosity will support Grace Mutheu, a high school student, and Gracetashia Njeri, a university student, creating opportunities that will change the trajectory of their lives.

By investing in the education of these two students, Grace's wish to open doors for girls to build brighter futures will continue to live on.

To Grace's family and friends, thank you for choosing to celebrate her life by opening doors for others.

Behind every letter is a reminder that someone believes in her.

When a donor sponsors a One Girl Can student’s 3-year high school education, they also have the opportunity to exchange letters with her throughout her journey. It's a chance to learn about her dreams and build a meaningful connection.

Our students share with us that knowing someone believes in them changes how they see themselves and what's possible for their future.

A scholarship makes education possible. A connection reminds a girl that she doesn't have to navigate the journey alone.

One Girl Can wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our incredible community of donors.

This spring, Tara joined us on a donor trip to Kenya and visited Ushirika Secondary School, where she reunited with her former student, Joylyn, who graduated in December, and met Salome and Victoria, the two girls whose high school education she is now sponsoring.

Watching them meet for the first time was such a special moment.

Thank you, Tara, for believing in One Girl Can’s girls, investing in their futures, and making the journey to Kenya to experience the impact firsthand.

“Why do we matter?”

It’s a question we hear often from girls in our partner schools in Kenya.

Last month, students at Nembu and Mbooni High Schools participated in our new YOU Matter workshop. Each girl wrote a letter to another student, sharing why she matters.

It was an emotional experience to witness the girls light up as they read their letters.

Thank you for helping us remind girls across Kenya that they matter, their dreams matter, and their futures matter.

Funds raised will help more girls from underserved communities in Kenya access the education, training, and mentorship they need to create brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Today, we want to recognize the Feminism Club at Burnaby South Secondary School for raising funds through a school bake sale to help fund the high school education of a One Girl Can student in Kenya.

We are inspired by these young changemakers and the impact they are already making.
