One of the most effective ways to unlock youth livelihoods is to resource the institutions that already have trust: community-based organizations (CBOs).
Across Kenya, SHOFCO supports grassroots CBOs with capacity-building and regranting, so they can design locally relevant pathways to income (digital skills, artisan work, practical trades, enterprise support). The result is a model that doesn’t just deliver services to communities; it builds power through them.
In Kisumu, for example, United Destiny Shapers Community Based Organization -UDS CBO, one of SHOFCO’s community-based partners has built an intensive agribusiness model spanning African leafy vegetables, poultry and fish farming, and black soldier fly production. Black soldier fly is used as feed for poultry and fish, and as a source of manure for the farms. This work has already created more than a dozen jobs for young women and men in Kisumu directly and indirectly.
That kind of impact raises the next question: what would it take to scale community-led models like this while keeping local ownership intact? Share one approach you’ve seen work.
