Today, we honour the memory of our founder, Lord Baden-Powell.
Eighty-five years ago, the founder of the Scout Movement passed away, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions of Scouts and Guides worldwide. After retiring, Baden-Powell settled in Nyeri, Kenya, where he lived in a cottage called Paxtu, named after Pax Hill, his home in England.
His gravestone bears a simple yet powerful symbol: a circle with a dot in the centre (ʘ), the Scout trail sign meaning “Going home.” His wife and World Chief Guide, Olave Baden-Powell, returned to England in 1942, and after her passing in 1977, her ashes were taken to Kenya and interred beside him.
Today, their resting place is a monument visited by thousands, a space for reflection and gratitude. Paxtu has become a museum, preserving Baden-Powell’s home, memories, and artwork. In 2001, the Kenyan government declared his grave a national monument, and last year it was recognised as a unique heritage site for the Scout and Guide Movements.
As Scouting in Europe, we remember where we come from and recommit to the values that continue to guide us forward. ⚜️
