A NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR HEALING, DIGNITY & SECOND CHANCES

Clean Start Africa (CSA) and the Bible Society of Kenya (BSK) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen trauma healing and support the restoration and reintegration of justice-impacted women and youth.

Speaking during the signing, CSA Founder & CEO Teresa Njoroge welcomed the partnership as an opportunity to drive a powerful cultural shift in how society responds to justice-impacted individuals upon release. With BSK’s extensive influence across Kenya’s Christian network and its engagement at policy and national levels, the partnership has the potential to open new pathways for challenging stigma and building communities of healing and acceptance.

Through the Trauma Healing Institute’s structured trauma healing programme, CSA Trainers of Trainers will be equipped to facilitate healing groups among women through Clean Start Chapters, while young people in Kikaos will be empowered to become peer trainers, creating a sustainable, peer-led pathway to healing.

Teresa also emphasised the critical role of family, church and community in supporting justice-impacted individuals, particularly children and young people, noting the need for these institutions to reclaim their collective responsibility in moulding, supporting and restoring lives.

For BSK General Secretary Elizabeth Muriuki, the MOU provides a practical foundation for training CSA’s Trainers of Trainers, establishing healing groups and expanding trauma-healing interventions to incarcerated persons and correctional officers. She also envisioned young people becoming trainers among their peers, creating spaces where healing can take root from within communities.

Together, CSA and BSK are building a coordinated pathway to bring trauma healing closer to those behind the walls and to those returning home.

Evidence that changes outcomes. Policy that changes lives.

Clean Start Africa Founder & CEO Teresa Njoroge, alongside Dr. Tioko Logiron, Deputy Director & Chief Researcher at the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC), led teams from both institutions in an exploratory meeting to identify opportunities for collaboration in research, evidence generation and criminal justice reform.

The proposed partnership seeks to establish a staged pathway towards a lasting collaboration, one that follows the justice journey from arrest, arraignment, prosecution and sentencing to incarceration and eventual release and reintegration.

At the heart of the conversation is a proposed flagship joint research programme designed to answer a critical question: What works to keep people out of the justice system and support better outcomes for those who come into contact with it?

NCRC brings national crime research, analytical capacity and policy influence, while CSA brings lived experience, community access and a tested reintegration model. Together, these strengths create an opportunity to move evidence beyond reports and into the institutions, policies and practices that shape people's lives.

For CSA, this is about ensuring that the experiences of justice-impacted people inform the evidence base. For NCRC, it is an opportunity to strengthen the pathway through which research findings reach justice institutions and influence practice.

Back to School, Back to Hope!
22.5 million children worldwide face parental imprisonment.
In Africa, approximately 3 million children have an incarcerated parent.
In Kenya, a staggering 39% of imprisoned mothers completely lose track of their children's whereabouts following their arrest.

For many children, the return to school is a season of excitement, new beginnings, and possibility. But for children impacted by the justice system, going back to school can come with uncertainty, stigma and challenges that many of us never see.

We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, belong, dream and thrive, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their family.

A parent’s incarceration should never become a child’s life sentence.

What Next After Graduation?
What does a second chance mean for those who are justice-impacted?

Clean Start Africa –Lintons Beauty World Academy & Lintons Foundation Alumni.

Graduation is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of a new chapter.

We recently celebrated the inspiring alumni of the Clean Start Africa –Lintons Academy & Foundation partnership, bringing together beneficiaries, partners, and champions to reflect on what comes next: turning skills into sustainable livelihoods and second chances into lasting independence.

In his powerful message, Clean Start Africa Board Advisor Dr. Malele Ngalu challenged the alumni to pursue three essential qualities:

Competence: Let the way you see yourself exude confidence in the quality of services you deliver.

Consistency: Serve your clients with honesty, integrity, and commitment, ensuring that your products and services speak for themselves.

Courage: Believe in yourself. Have the courage to start, persevere through challenges, and refuse to give up.

Dr. Joyce Gikunda, Founder of Lintons Academy & Foundation, encouraged the alumni to embrace networking, partnerships, and the opportunities that come through meaningful connections, because growth is rarely achieved alone.

Teresa Njoroge, Founder and CEO of Clean Start Africa, urged the alumni to embrace every opportunity that comes their way as an opportunity to start anew, reminding them that the past should never become a yoke that limits their future.

Partners Dennis Macharia of Kupa Kenya Welfare Association and Coach Joshua Ochieng of Umande Africa Institute also shared words of wisdom and encouragement with the alumni.

Also present were the Lintons Foundation General Manager, Jessica Francisca Colaço, and the Lintons Academy GM, Millicent, and the Principal, Lintons Academy - Susan Kimani, among other dignitaries.

Then came the voices that matter most: the beneficiaries themselves.

Feddy, Natasha and Esther, on behalf of the beneficiaries, shared powerful testimonies of how this opportunity has given them more than skills. It has given them a new start, renewed confidence and a pathway toward economic independence.

Now, we need to help them take the next step - decent, sustainable livelihoods.
