A recent study among adolescent girls and young women in Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya, found significant associations between extreme weather events, resource insecurities, HIV vulnerability factors, and self reported urinary tract infection symptoms.
Key findings include:
โข 41.6% of participants reported UTI symptoms
โข Exposure to multiple extreme weather events was associated with higher odds of UTI symptoms
โข Water, food, sanitation, and menstruation insecurities emerged as important risk factors
โข Transactional s*x, mobility, and multiple s*xual partnerships were also associated with increased vulnerability
The findings underscore the need for integrated approaches that address climate resilience, water and sanitation access, menstrual health, and s*xual and reproductive health as interconnected priorities.
As climate related shocks become more frequent, strengthening health systems requires looking beyond clinical care and addressing the broader conditions that shape health outcomes.
