KEAN International is an international non-profit bringing together climate and environmental leadership across Afrika, and with the global community. We are spreading the seeds of goodness in the climate and environmental landscapes in Afrika and beyond. Our vision was planted on the fertile Afrikan soils in 2020, with the intention to support the climate and environmental movements. Over the yea

rs, we have grown to deliver impact programming on-the-ground and across the region. From the Afrika Youth Caravan to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s to Bustani Gardens, Technology for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) projects to Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) pilots, AfrikaIsNotADumpster campaign to Climate Change Policy youth engagements, we continue to explore ways we can centre Afrikan communities and the solutions they bring, while respecting their dignity and their authentic solutions. We believe that when we bring meaningful engagements together, we enable collaborations that help us create strong institutions, resilient communities, and create regenerative legacies for the planet. We are united by our zeal for collective and individual actions to deliver solutions to the climate, ecosystems and community crises. Our mantra; Keen towards environmental solutions. Our pillars;
Youth Action,
Knowledge Sharing,
Policy Influence, and
Capacity Building

Mission ~ To connect climate and environmental actions

Vision ~ A collaborative space for nurturing environmental sustainability leaders across Afrika

Objective ~ To create a space for active implementation of SDGs & Afrika's Agenda 2063

Every day is Labour Day for our amazing waste pickers!

They don’t just collect and sort waste, they’re the heartbeat of our community, turning trash into treasure. At KEAN's Organic Rebirth Project, we are not just creating compost; we are nurturing a whole ecosystem where waste workers are celebrated, farmers thrive, and communities take charge of their future.

Together, we are building a circular economy from the ground up!

Join us in honouring those who make this change possible. 💚

The discipline of composting

Great compost doesn’t happen by chance, it requires precision and patience.

Minimum of 5 compost layers (courses)
Heap height must allow monitoring and aeration
Temperature must reach 58–65°C to kill pathogens
Turn the heap every 21 days (3 times total)
Maintain moisture; not too dry, not too wet

No shortcuts. Just science and consistency.

The most powerful outcome?

Participants didn’t just learn, they committed to act.

Farmers and waste workers pledged to:
✔️Start their own compost heaps
✔️Share knowledge within their communities
✔️Promote sustainable farming practices

From one demonstration to a growing movement.

A compost heap is alive.

It breathes (needs oxygen)
It feeds (on organic materials)
It drinks (needs water)
It grows (through microbial activity)

And like all living systems, it thrives when properly managed.

Respect the process. Trust the science. Reap the benefits

What if markets didn’t produce waste but resources?

By recycling organic waste into compost:
✅️Nutrients return to the soil
✅️Waste volume reduces by up to 60%
✅️Farmers reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers
✅️Communities create green jobs

This is the future of waste management in Kiambu County and beyond.

This wasn’t just a training, it was co-creation in action.

After the first layer demonstration by agronomist Teresia Wairimu of Hygrow Fertilizer, something powerful happened…

🌟Waste pickers and farmers took over
🌟Each layer was built collaboratively
🌟Knowledge was shared, adapted, and owned

This is what sustainable change looks like. People learning by doing and teaching others.

Compost is more than fertilizer, such that it’s a soil transformer.
Improves soil structure (binds sandy soils, loosens clay soils)
Increases water retention (1kg of humus holds up to 6L of water)
Supplies nutrients slowly for sustained crop growth
Reduces pests & diseases through high-temperature decomposition (up to 60°C).
Neutralizes soil acidity for better yields

This is how we build resilient farming systems in Kenya, starting from waste.

Waste pickers + farmers + 60 tonnes of organic waste = community-built compost. 🌍♻️

Six layers. 60 litres of water. One 21-day turning cycle. And one powerful shift watching the community take the lead after the very first demonstration.

From market waste to dark, earthy, nutrient-rich compost. This is the circular economy, happening right here in Kiambu County. 🌱

Today, through a convening by the Children and Youth Major Group to the UNEP, KEAN International reflected on some hard truths, that;
-The world wastes over 1 billion tonnes of food annually
-Food waste contributes 8-10% of global GHG emissions
-But still, more than 700 million people go hungry.

In Kenya, this contradiction is even more stark. Markets overflow with organic waste, while farmers struggle with declining soil fertility, post-harvest losses, and rising input costs.

Through the OrganicRebirth project, we are responding differently, where we are;
-Turning food waste into organic fertilizer
-Building closed-loop systems that link markets, households, and farms
-Centering informal waste workers as co-owners, not invisible labor
-Restoring soils while restoring dignity

From today’s discussions, one thing remains clear, that individual action is not enough. Systems change is necessary.
