A DEAD FLY IN PERFUME

As someone once wisely put it, “No matter how soft the mattress, if there is one tiny thorn sticking up through it, all the softness goes for nothing.” Similarly, even small lapses in judgment or foolish acts can overshadow a lifetime of wisdom and honor. Solomon, despite his immense wisdom and accomplishments, exhibited human vulnerability through struggles with pride, indulgence, and inconsistency in following God’s instructions. This vividly reflects the truth of Ecclesiastes 10:1: “Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor” (ESV).

Friends, Let us therefore, strive for diligence and consistency in our character. May we remain ever mindful of our actions, ensuring that the fragrance of our lives is not tainted by folly, but instead reflects the beauty of wisdom and honor.
