MATTERS GOVERNANCE

The Framework of KDS Corporate Leadership Strategy

Formulation of Corporate Leadership Strategy should always be based on the following institutional management fundamentals:
1. Vision of an organization
2. Mission statement
3. Goals; and
4. Strategic objectives

In KDS, our vision is to secure Unity and Prosperity of Karungu people which is stated as United & Prosperous Karungu.

Hence, our strategic leadership pillars are twofold namely -
1. Unity of Karungu community, and
2. Prosperity of Karungu people.

To secure Unity of the local community, KDS membership registration process is open to anybody with roots in Karungu - men, women and daughters of the local community regardless of one's present geographical settlement.

Today, our membership base comprises sons, women and daughters of Karungu community in Kenya and in the diaspora.

Most significantly, KDS has mobilised Karungu interlectuals to work as a team through membership recruitment process, guided election process and by our appointment of local professionals into strategic leadership positions - either as departmental directors or technical advisers on matters policy in their respective areas of specialization.

The aforesaid milestone is an achievement that we need to appreciate and celebrate in Karungu given that in many other surrounding communities, the professionals are the cause of disunity since they are ever involved in incessant tag of wars over control of the vulnerable masses instead of focusing on how to uplift living standards in their local communities.

The current focus of KDS leadership is to cascade establishment of the existing national governance structures at the branch network level to help coordinate operations in the local jurisdictions where we have membership presence.

This is to be followed by gradual establishment of Home Office Management System right from locations upto the Sub-County level. At the moment, we already have an interm home office

PHOEBE NYAR AGORO - A ROLE MODEL MOTHER FIGURE

The demise of Dr Phoebe Asiyo 'Nyar Agoro' has left a deep hole in Kenya in terms of showcasing high leadership credentials to the youth.

She was ever decently dressed; a mark of imparting good example to the women folk that code of dressing is a key element in the public domain.

She was one of the pioneer woman leaders in Kenya who facilitated the establishment of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake in Kenya - an outfit which champions social economic empowerment of women across the country.

Dr Phoebe Asiyo also served as MP for Karachuonyo.

Most importantly, she was ever an admirable leader in public and a good wife material at home who knew how to balance between her official assignments and domestic obligations. She was never carried away from her home management roles by the trappings of power; an acid test for many a woman in leadership positions in the contemporary world.

We trust that the Luo Nation will navigate the emergence of another high profile role model in our local community and beyond.

Let our modern ladies emulate the virtues of the late Phoebe Asiyo for their own perpetual good.

Nind gi kwe 'Maro'.

THE POWER OF LANGUAGE IN THE BUSINESS WORLD

Language is the basic medium of communication in the society. Therefore, any entrepreneur desiring to sell goods and services in the competitive marketplace ought to communicate in a language which is understood by the potential consumers.

Whereas the renowned author the late Prof Ngugi wa Thiong'o was largely right with his intention to conserve his native Kikuyu language by writing his books in the local language, such a noble endeavor wasn't so strategic in the contemporary business environment where English language remains the dominant international medium of communication.

From a marketing perspective, the current youthful generation is increasingly getting urbanized by adopting English and Kiswahili/Sheng' languages as their primary mediums of communication both at school and in the social world.

This brings us to the realization that as much as we would wish to retain our African Identity in different facets of life, we need to appreciate the fact that we are already living in a global village with popular international languages of communication that we need to embrace if we are to remain relevant in the dynamic global arena.

The reality is that globalization is here to stay with us indefinitely, hence the need to embrace its universal languages for human interface.

The sad reality is that our indiginous languages are already dying gradually and will eventually only remain in the history books for reference.

Therefore, our youth are encouraged to pursue English, Kiswahili, French, German and other international languages to enhance their employment opportunities in the job market. This is because language is the most powerful medium of communication in the society across ethnic, racial and territorial boundaries when it comes to social interaction and business dealings.

POLITICS OF IDEOLOGY

IDEOLOGY is what should define the direction of public service establishments.

It's what informs how an organization handles its affairs.

It's the core guiding principle.

Hence, people who want to join an organization - whether political or otherwise - ought to be influenced by the fundamental beliefs of the organization.

Therefore, a public outfit without well defined ideology and philosophy can't provide effective service delivery due to lack of a clear institutionalised direction that defines the way forward steps.

AFRICAN LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

The African leadership challenge is rooted in the absence of homegrown governance structures that embrace ethic diversity, lack of employment of regional affirmative action in key leadership positions, and the inability to create elaborate checks and balances between law makers and policy implementation organs.

The African PLAN Project of Ngala Jared Community Development Foundation is conceptualized to address the identified perennial shortcomings in the continent of Africa.

RIP SAM NUJOMA

The history of African freedom fighters will never be complete without mentioning revolutionary legends like Dedan Kimathi of the Mau Mau Movement in Kenya, Jones Savimbi of UNITA Party in Angola and Sam NUJOMA of Namibia.

These were galant sons of Africa who risked their lives in pursuit of freedom from the yoke colonialism.

I therefore take this opportunity to salute SAM NUJOMA who rested recently in Namibia on the 8th February 2025 at the age 95.

May his fighting spirit linger forever in the minds of successive generations of Africans to protect the gains the freedom fighters fought for - the attainment of self rule, to ensure equatable distribution of public resources to end poverty in our rich continent.

RIP SAM NUJOMA.
