NASAC - Network of African Science Academies The General Assembly is the Overall decision making body of NASAC comprising of the presidents of the member academies.

NASAC brings together science academies and facilitates discussions on the scientific aspects of challenges of common concern, so as to make common statements on major issues relevant to Africa and to provide mutual support to member Academies. The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) was established on 13th December 2001 in Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the Inter Academy Panel (lAP).The NASAC leadership structure consists of the General Assembly, the Board, the Secretariat and Executive Director's from the member academies. The NASAC Board is the Executive arm of NASAC and it constitutes a chair, 3 vice chairs, member-in-charge of scientific matters, secretary General, Treasurere and immediate past President.

The Science Diplomacy Learning Lab at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, continues next week with a masterclass on "African Women Scientists Driving Science Diplomacy in Times of Crisis."

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jackie Kado, Executive Director of the NASAC - Network of African Science Academies, and Prof. Francoise Driver, Chair of African Studies at University of Mauritius, for an online session exploring how African women scientists lead, build bridges and shape science-informed responses when crises test cooperation across borders.

The discussion will look at leadership, science-policy engagement and continental partnerships, and at how women scientists are helping to build a more resilient and inclusive African science diplomacy.

What if the most important measure of scientific excellence isn’t just what you discover but what your discovery changes?

Africa’s scientific challenges demand more than groundbreaking research. They demand ideas that can shape policy, solve real-world problems, inform communities and create pathways for sustainable development.

That is the thinking behind the AMASA 2026 Prizes for Emerging Science and Societal Impact.

-Emerging Science Prize - recognizing early-career scientists advancing new ideas, methods and approaches to Africa’s emerging challenges.

-Societal Impact Prize - recognizing established scientists whose research has translated into policy, practice, technology, public understanding or improved community outcomes.

The question is not simply “How good is the research?”

It is also: “How far does the knowledge travel and what does it make possible?”

If your work is pushing the boundaries of science or turning evidence into impact, this could be your opportunity to be recognised.

📅 Nomination deadline: 15 October 2026

Why does Africa’s digital transformation matter?

Because Africa’s digital future is no longer a distant ambition it is already reshaping how we work, learn, trade, access healthcare, conduct research and deliver public services.

But transformation is not simply about becoming more digital. It is about ensuring that digital progress is secure, inclusive, trusted and sustainable.

AI can accelerate development. Digital infrastructure can unlock opportunity. Innovation can strengthen economies. But without cybersecurity, responsible governance, ethical frameworks and digital capacity, the same systems can create new vulnerabilities and deepen existing inequalities.

This is where science matters.

At science academies in Africa and partners will explore how evidence, innovation and collaboration can help shape a digital transformation that works for Africa.

Science doesn’t just explain Africa’s challenges. It can help shape the solutions.

Every year, the Annual Meeting of African Science Academies (AMASA) brings together some of the continent’s brightest scientific minds, policymakers, researchers and partners to turn knowledge into action.

From STEM education and sustainable agriculture to climate change, gene editing and gender equality in science, AMASA creates a space where ideas cross borders, disciplines connect, and evidence meets policy.

Because Africa’s biggest challenges rarely fit neatly into one discipline or one country.

🤝 AMASA is about collaboration.
🔬 It is about strengthening science.
💡 It is about sharing knowledge.
🌱 And ultimately, it is about building solutions for Africa’s future.

As we look toward AMASA 2026 in Nairobi, the conversation continues:

How can African science work together to build a more innovative, resilient and sustainable continent?

📅 10 -12 November 2026

The challenges are continental. The solutions must be collaborative.

Africa’s digital future is arriving fast. But are we building it fast enough and safely enough?

AI is transforming healthcare, agriculture, finance, education and research. Digital systems are connecting more people and creating new opportunities. Yet with every new connection comes a new responsibility: security, trust, ethics, resilience and inclusion.

That is why the conversation cannot be left to technology alone.
At , African science academies, researchers, policymakers, innovators and partners will come together in Nairobi to explore what it will take to secure Africa’s digital transformation.

From AI for sustainable development to cybersecurity, digital resilience, governance, ethics, capacity and innovation, the question is not simply what can technology do?

It is:
What should technology do for Africa, and how do we make sure it works for everyone?
