Nairobi's rivers, including the Nairobi, Ngong, and Mathare, are vital natural resources that have suffered significant pollution due to urbanization, industrial waste, and inadequate waste management. Cleaning these rivers is crucial for improving public health, as it would reduce the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly benefiting communities living near the riverbanks. A revitalized river ecosystem would also support biodiversity, fostering habitats for fish, plants, and birds. Additionally, clean rivers could become a reliable water source, helping address Nairobi's water scarcity. Economically, restored rivers would attract tourism and recreation, creating jobs and enhancing local areas. They also play a role in climate resilience by aiding groundwater recharge, temperature regulation, and flood management. For GCDEC, supporting the cleanup and restoration of Nairobi's rivers aligns with a vision of vibrant, sustainable ecosystems that benefit both communities and the environment.

Nairobi National Park, established in 1946, is Kenya's first national park and uniquely located near Nairobi's city center. It houses diverse wildlife, including lions, rhinos, and over 400 bird species. The park is vital for conservation, featuring a rhinoceros sanctuary and wildlife corridors to ensure species survival. Efforts include habitat preservation, community involvement, and anti-poaching measures. Challenges like urban encroachment, climate change, and tourism impact require careful management. Despite these, the park has seen wildlife population recovery and increased conservation awareness, showcasing the successful integration of wildlife protection in an urban environment.
